"Also, how about Julianne Moore's performance in Still Alice? Incredible, right?" That was Fred Armisen's running gag in his Independent Spirit Awards monologue today. It's also the night's comedic highlight so far. Yes, she is incredible. It was the most memorable performance of the year. Full Story

Jessica Chastain is the furthest thing from a sore loser. Did Laura Dern steal her Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Oscars? Probably. But you could never tell by the look of Jessica's glowing smile on the Independent Spirit Awards red carpet. What's not to love? She's a natural who doesn't take these honours too seriously, even though she's nominated at the Indie Spirits. Full Story

Chris Pratt is a big deal now, you know this. And soon to be bigger when Jurassic World comes out. But he showed up for his friend Adam Scott at the Hot Tub Time Machine 2 premiere which, of course, he didn’t have to do. He’s there though, not only to support his homie but also because, given that his star power is more powerful than any of the actors in the movie, he knows he can use it to benefit a movie that’s not even his own. Full Story

We’ve known for the better part of a year that Jason Momoa will be playing Aquaman in Superhero Face Punch, but last night was the first time it was actually confirmed when Zack Snyder tweeted a picture of Momoa in full Aquaman costume, along with the words “Unite the Seven”. Full Story

In the run-up to the Oscars The Hollywood Reporter has started doing this thing where they get select members of the Academy to fill out their Oscar ballot and explain why they’re voting the way they’re voting. So far they have three this year, which you can read here Full Story

Fifty Shades author wants to whip sequel into submission

Whatever we may think of it, Fifty Shades of Grey is an unqualified hit, with $300 million at the worldwide box office and counting. In some respects, that’s a good thing: A movie by women, about women, for women is a monster success. Every time we clock a win like this, it gets that much harder to deny that movies by and about women can’t be profitable, or are somehow “risky”. Full Story

Daniel Craig and Monica Bellucci posed in Rome yesterday. Production on Spectre will begin in Rome on March 8th. It’s been kind of a bumpy ride so far. Craig hurt his knee earlier this month in studio in London and a crew member was injured last week in Austria. The Rome scenes will reportedly involve a car chase and at some point they’ll crash it into the Tiber. Full Story

Will there be sing-yelling at the Oscars?

Musicals are not my bag, so I had to brace myself to watch The Last 5 Years, an adaptation of Jason Robert Brown’s musical. I still ended up texting Lainey ten minutes in, electrically shouting that they wouldn’t stop singing because THEY WOULDN’T STOP SINGING. Musicals are inherently creepy—hey, you’ve just been stabbed, let’s stop to sing and dance about how you’re dying—but I can deal with the construct. Full Story

Ha. Look at Mae Whitman. In the best outfit she’s ever worn. For the premiere of The DUFF in NYC last night. The DUFF opens this weekend. Mae plays The DUFF– Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Robbie Amell is her childhood best friend, next door neighbour, nemesis, and, well, I think you know the formula. Full Story

Scarlett Johansson is testing for psychopaths

Scarlett Johansson’s career re-direct over the last several years is impressive. She’s become one of the very few actresses who can open an action movie, she’s retained her artistic indie cred, she’s doing the motherhood thing without turning it into a career move, and she has become rather exclusive in her public appearances, so that when she does show up somewhere, it feels like kind of a big deal. Full Story

I don’t think I’ve talked about Fifty Shades Of Grey at all this week. Have I? Pretty sure no. Pretty sure I haven’t asked you about Dakota Johnson yet. As I told you last week in my review of the movie, she totally makes the movie. You are so into her in the movie. Weren’t you? So far, I haven’t heard from anyone telling me I’m out of my ass on that point. Full Story

The film adaptation of Philip Roth’s novel American Pastoral has undergone some upheaval during its development. First Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly were going to star as the central couple, then Bettany dropped out and was replaced by Ewan McGregor—but Connelly stuck around (does that make for weird dinner conversation at home?). Full Story

We studied Thomas Hardy for a few weeks in one of my elective Fem-Lit university classes one year. I was not great with attendance at the time. There was a casino that had just opened two hours away. My parents were out of the country. For several months, I made some very bad decisions. Can’t recall why I showed up for that session in particular – probably lost all my money – but I’ll never forget the discussion, even though I hadn’t done any of the reading. Full Story
