Dear Gossips,

The best article I read yesterday was about Bill Murray. Murray’s film St Vincent will be screening at TIFF. The festival wants to also take the opportunity at the gala to honour Murray’s career. Only no one was able to find him. Because, as you know, Bill Murray isn’t available like that. It’s legendary now how Murray lives his life – disconnected from Hollywood, absent from the carpet, but more likely to show up at some random person’s wedding and give a speech.

Apparently a search committee, that included Harvey Weinstein, had to be formed to track Murray down. So he didn’t jump when Harvey said “call me back”? LOVE that.

St Vincent was originally intended for Jack Nicholson and written in collaboration with him. It’s a familiar story – the crusty old man and the little boy next door. Nicholson ended up backing out because he’s pretty much retired now but suggested that Bill Murray replace him. They’re calling it one of the strongest performances of Murray’s career with an outside shot at a nomination. Outside shot? Who wouldn’t want to see Bill Murray win an Oscar?

I’ve attached the St Vincent trailer below. You know what’s throwing me off here? Naomi Watts.

Is Ethan Hawke your re-boyfriend yet? If you say no, is it because you haven’t seen Boyhood? See it. Then be the contrarian. I know the type. The film has received near universal acclaim, currently sitting at a 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But some people just get ruined by hype. Full Story

While Justin Bieber was fronting like he’s all big and bad in Orlando Bloom’s face last night, Selena Gomez was at the Hollywood premiere for her new movie Behaving Badly. It’s a bad title. It looks like a really bad movie. Maybe that’s why she seems so …uncomfortable? Let’s play Photo Assumption and make some baseless suggestions about why she looks so clenched. Full Story

It was a great weekend for Scarlett Johansson. It’s a wonderful time for Scarlett Johansson. Lucy exceeded expectations at the box office, coming in at #1 with almost $45 million and overpowering Dwayne The Rock Johnson’s Hercules. And this just a couple of weeks after Sarah posted this article Full Story

A few days ago THR reported that Joaquin Phoenix and Marvel are in negotiations for him to play Dr Strange. I mean, he’s definitely right for it. On talent, he could totally do it. Of course he could. But… is Joaquin Phoenix a Company Man? Think of how RDJ is a Company Man now for Marvel. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy was originally scheduled to open later. But, as Sarah wrote back in May, the studio moved up the release date to avoid Guardians Of The Galaxy. And it was the right move. Because Scarjo took out The Rock!

$44 million! Do you remember even seeing a red carpet or any kind of publicity tour for that film? Nope. She’s pregnant. She hasn’t been hustling. And the reviews weren’t great for Lucy either. But reviews aren’t great for many male-driven action movies. So if doesn’t matter for the men, why should it matter for the women?

Few women can topline this kind of feature.  Read Full Intro

First, Marvel’s panel started nearly twenty minutes late. Then, they didn’t announce anything new, except that the Guardians of the Galaxy’s pre-destined sequel will open on July 28, 2017. There was no news on Dr. Strange, or long-awaited confirmation of a Black Panther and/or Captain Marvel movie. Full Story

Warner Brothers did a good job of keeping the appearance of Zack Snyder and comics’ Holy Trinity (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) a secret in the run up to their panel on Saturday morning in Hall H. When Snyder took the stage and introduced his trio of stars, it felt like a legit surprise, and made for a great Hall H moment—the first time the Trinity has appeared together. Full Story

Sarah has written at length about Comic-Con strategy – how often false hype can be generated out of San Diego (Sucker Punch) that ultimately leads to disappointment. But Comic-Con can also be a legitimate momentum build, especially for projects that seemed worrisome, projects that may have been burdened by the weight of expectation. Full Story

Wonder Woman’s new look

After having the new costume for Wonder Woman teased last month, at Comic-Con on Saturday Zack Snyder unveiled the first look for his cinematic version of the character, and it’s not bad. It’s still pretty T&A for a character who is supposed to be a warrior first and foremost, but let’s be real—it could have been much worse. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

I really, really want to see Boyhood this weekend. Duana and Lara went the other night and yesterday sent an email to a few of our friends with the title “ALERT”:

“Boyhood made me love Ethan Hawke again. Use at your own risk.”

That is a risk. Because I’d been going off Troy Dyer for a while. And then… Before Midnight. Also, there was a Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight marathon on TV recently. That didn’t help either.

Experiment: Can Richard Linklater’s Ethan Hawke stand up after a viewing of Billy Idol’s Ethan Hawke? This is what I’ll do as soon as I leave the theatre after Boyhood. Pull up a shot of Billy Ethan Hawke on my phone as a fickle test.

Trying to decide whether or not I should blind you again today and make it a 3-blind week. It’s Friday and so many people are taking off early. Hold to next week or do now? Tell me.

Have a great weekend!

Lainey

Is this a gift for you? If not, it’s a gift for me. I’m into Wes Bentley. Sarah’s been texting me today about all the mystery around who’s going to be Dr Strange per the big Marvel announcement coming tomorrow and all the speculation and my vote, although they’ve not spoken of him as a possibility, would be Wes Bentley. Full Story

Cumberbatch Con

Comic-Con is in full swing and yesterday Benedict Cumberbatch kicked it off in good old fashion convention style—thousands of screaming girls yelling his name in an enclosed space. Actually, I’m trying to remember if Comic-Con was like this in the pre-Twilight days. While I remember plenty of excitable nerds, Twilight brought fangirls, which I don’t really remember before 2008. Full Story
