A curious thing has happened to Comic-Con over the last few years. Despite being a huge engine that drives pop culture, it has become crystal clear that there is no value in Comic-Con. It’s one of the weirdest things I have ever seen happen in the film industry—no one denies how big Comic-Con is, but its actual value is nil. Full Story

Magic Mike for women

I was not expecting to like Magic Mike XXL, let alone love it, but I do kind of love it. What I like about Magic Mike is that it looks like a smutty movie but really it’s about the frustration of the American Dream, although based on the number of times Lainey has complained about Magic Mike being too talky, I think I may be alone in appreciating that it’s actually a fairly character-driven film. Full Story

Just like there was a ring on Ben Affleck’s finger in the totally not staged, super candid photos that PEOPLE Full Story

Rachel McAdams for Strange

Marvel’s Doctor Strange is slated to begin production late this year, but so far the movie is operating on a relatively low key. This is Kevin Feige’s pet project, with extra scrutiny on its security as they go about casting, so take this with a grain of salt, but the latest rumor is that Rachel McAdams has been offered the female lead opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Did you know that Hello Kitty lives just outside of London and has a twin sister called Mimmy? She also bakes and collects goldfish. No? No idea. Me neither. But now I do because Hello Kitty is becoming a movie.

And it’s not like I never went through a Hello Kitty phase. Every summer, I’d go back to Hong Kong to stay with my ma. Every year I’d come back to school with Hello Kitty gear – pencil cases, erasers, notebooks, lunchboxes. But that’s it. I’d never write in my Hello Kitty binder and wonder about Hello Kitty’s personality. Didn’t give a sh-t about her life. Hello Kitty has a life?!? Hello Kitty has to matter to me beyond the fact that Mimi dedicated an entire room to her in her apartment?

Hello Kitty, the movie, is planned for release in 2019.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey

Henry Cavill was in Dublin this weekend attending the Groove Festival. Those are not festival-fitting jeans. Those are not any-fitting jeans. God I’ve never wanted to go shopping with/for a guy so badly. There has to be a pair of pants that works for him. I refuse to believe that this is impossible. Full Story

Today in “We Could Have Had It All” news, Ava DuVernay told Essence magazine in an interview that she ended up passing on the Black Panther directing gig, citing “different ideas” with Marvel over the direction the movie should take. This is a total bummer, because DuVernay seemed like a great fit Full Story

Wet Hot American Summer is a modern comedy classic, and by the rules of contemporary cinema, since it’s fourteen years old, it’s old enough for nostalgia. And you know what nostalgia means—it’s time for a sequel/remake/reboot! Or rather, it’s time for a prequel TV show premiering on Netflix on July 31, titled Wet Hot American Summer: The First Day of Camp. Full Story

Amy Schumer is promoting her movie, Trainwreck, due in a couple weeks, which means she’s giving a lot of interviews and is very visible right now, which means we have a lot to talk about. Specifically, we have to have the sacred cow conversation again, because Schumer is being called out for her racial comedy and also her non-intersectional feminism Full Story

This should have been the title of the movie. The first trailer for Secret In Their Eyes has been released starring Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Nicole Kidman. It’s based on an Argentinian film (that went on to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.) That’s important to note because, well, it won the Oscar. Full Story

Sunday in London. At a recording studio. Chris Martin and Guy Berryman (I think? It looks like Guy Berryman, right?) were there. And then Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt arrived. Maybe they were working independently at the same place. But then again, Angelina and Chris have worked together before. Full Story

The (first) premiere (of many) for Ant-Man was last night in Los Angeles, and Paul Rudd and his time-defying face were there to christen his new superhero movie. This is being billed as Rudd’s “first” leading-man role, because he’s known best to general audiences for being an ensemble player in comedies like The 40 Year Old Virgin and Anchorman. Full Story

It’s not like I expected greatness from Ted 2, but I did have some expectation that it would be amusing, at least. Ted was surprisingly funny, and though it had plenty of signature Seth MacFarlane poop humor, it also had a nice little story about friendship at its center, and more jokes landed than didn’t. Full Story

Filmmaker David Gordon Green has a weirdly binary career. On one side are comedies like Pineapple Express, The Sitter, and Eastbound & Down, and on the other are slow, thoughtful dramas, usually set in the rural South, that show a heavy Terrence Malick influence. Green’s latest, Manglehorn, is of the Malickian variety, a slow, thoughtful drama about an odd and lonely man in Texas. Full Story
