In the eyes of his "Cumberbitches" online, Benedict Cumberbatch is a hero. In The Imitation Game, he cracks the code of his hype and fandom, and finally gets to play one. How? It's elementary. As WWII codebreaker Alan Turing, Cumberbatch is a mathematical genius who also happens to be a pompous, socially awkward outcast. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Last night during the Q&A for The Imitation Game, someone in the audience asked Benedict Cumberbatch…

“Can I have some of your yummy-ness?”

Cameron Bailey, creative director of TIFF, did not look impressed. Cumberbatch’s cast mates looked over at him, saying nothing. He said nothing. And I felt bad for him, which is absurd, because he quite likely will receive an Oscar nomination for this role. Maybe that’s why I felt bad for him. He just delivered the performance of his career and his yummy-ness is the conversation.

That was supposed to be across the street, at Roy Thomson Hall, where Robert Pattinson was representing Maps To The Stars. So you see now why I wrote last week  Read Full Intro

Lainey texted me over the weekend about how she’s excited to see The Riot Club, a movie about secret societies at Oxford (it’s playing TIFF later this week). I’m into it for Natalie Dormer, but Lainey’s all over it because of the gaggle of British boys who star in it. While we agree on a few exceptions—Aaron Taylor-Johnson, for instance, though he’s hottest when he’s around Sam—Lainey likes boys and I like men. Full Story

The ALS Ice Bucket challenge continues to steam-roll through popular culture, cluttering up everyone’s timelines and inspiring countless think pieces and rants, all while raising over forty million dollars for ALS research and support, which is tremendously awesome and everyone can just shut the f*ck up about how annoying the ice bucket challenge is because it’s WORKING. Full Story

Actors take jobs. Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor, and he’s just taken a job portraying the tiger Shere Khan in Andy Serkis’s Jungle Book (not to be confused with Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book). If all you care about is that Benedict Cumberbatch’s voice will be coming out of a tiger’s mouth, then great, this is your money shot, stop reading. Full Story

Comic-Con is in full swing and yesterday Benedict Cumberbatch kicked it off in good old fashion convention style—thousands of screaming girls yelling his name in an enclosed space. Actually, I’m trying to remember if Comic-Con was like this in the pre-Twilight days. While I remember plenty of excitable nerds, Twilight brought fangirls, which I don’t really remember before 2008. Full Story

In 2011 the Black List was topped by a script for a biopic of Alan Turing, the computer scientist who developed the early computer that the British used to break the German’s Enigma code. You might also recognize his name from the Turing Test, a series of questions meant to determine if a machine is capable of fooling a human interrogator into thinking it’s human. Full Story

Prince William hosted an event last night for the Royal Marsden and all kinds of celebrities were there, including Cate Blanchett, Kate Moss, Ralph Lauren and family, and Benedict Cumberbatch. At one point Kate Moss asked him about Kate Middleton. He told her she wasn’t coming and Moss’s reply was, “Such a shame”. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

TIME has released its annual list of 100 Most Influential People. The categories are: Titans, Pioneers, Artists, Leaders, Icons. So who’s a Titan?

Beyonce, of course.

To me, what’s been most interesting on this list isn’t necessarily who’s on it but the people who are chosen or have volunteered to write the piece that accompanies the entry. Beyonce’s, for example, was written by Sheryl Sandberg. Pharrell, who is also a Titan, was honoured by Justin Timberlake – who did it last year for Jimmy Fallon and made it all about himself (click here for a refresher). JT managed to restrain his ego this time.

Under the Icon category, we find…Carrie Underwood.  Read Full Intro

One of our producers had a seat in the bleachers this year, taking pictures and Instagram video as part of our social media team. This is the text she sent me around noon: “I’m sitting with the MiniVan Majority.” When Benedict Cumberbatch arrived, no one in her section of the bleachers knew who he was. Full Story

Here’s my Valentine gift to those of you who are fans of Benedict Cumberbatch – his double thumbs! Bendy was in New York yesterday for the BAFTA New York Presents: In Conversation With Benedict Cumberbatch. So what did they talk about? Well, given that he’s really “internet-famous”, as Sarah calls it, how come he doesn’t use social media? “It would take over my life and probably ruin it. Full Story

Benedict Sherlock

Benedict Cumberbatch went on Sesame Street and did a math bit with Murray and the Count. It’s cute, I guess. I don’t have any fond nostalgia for Sesame Street—I only remember watching it at school when it was raining and we couldn’t go outside at recess—so I have no real opinion about celebrities going on the show beyond it is a thing that they do and I bet taping a segment with any combination of Sesame Street/Muppets characters is probably loads of fun. Full Story

Benedict Cumberbatch was enjoying himself at the SAG Awards. I mean that sincerely, no side-eye. Every time I caught a glimpse of him in the audience, he was smiling and laughing, sitting at the 12 Years a Slave table but making time for his August: Osage County co-stars, too. It had to feel nice, being a double nominee as part of the 12 Years and Osage County ensembles—it’s a positive footnote to the year that didn’t go quite as originally planned Full Story
