Duana Posted by Duana

This is more of a general name nerd question - what is your feeling on the meaning of names? Do you think it's important? Does giving a child a name with a negative meaning equal bad karma?? --------- This is a great question, because people really, really have differing opinions on it and it’s hard for one side to talk to the other, like we’re in slightly different name languages. Full Article

My sister and her husband have always been torn on the last name of their children. They are both very attached to their names and families and want that reflected in their children. They had a boy in 2013 and a girl is due in December. For their son, my sister compromised by having her last name as a middle name and her husband's as a last name. Full Article

Hi Duana, I hope you can help. I've recently signed up for a Fresh Meat Bootcamp hosted by the local roller derby. I've always thought roller derby looked really fun and cool, and would be quite the physical challenge since I'd never roller skated before … and am almost 40. Full Article

Duana, please help!? My spouse and I are expecting our first child, a boy, in October. His family is German/Dutch and mine is German/British. The only thing we have agreed on is that we both would like to go the German route as our heritage is a big part of both our families. The family names are not options (Peter (baby would be the third), Anthonus, Lawrence (3 Rence's), and Adolf (for obvious reasons). Full Article

Duana, The other day one of my girlfriends and I were talking about baby names and she was telling me that she is having a lot of trouble coming up with names. I absolutely love reading all of your posts and thought who could be better to ask than you! She is pregnant with her 2nd and not sure if she is having a girl or a boy. Full Article

Hi Duana, So you'll probably want to punch me in the face over this.  I kind of want to punch myself in the face.  After some fertility challenges, we are proud parents to Charlotte (Lotte).  (I know how you feel about that but don't trash me because I love the name.) We are expecting baby #2, which should be the best news in the world considering the challenges we've had and simply because we love being parents. Full Article

Hi Duana, A new four-legged friend joined our family this week and we are all in love. The problem? We can't agree on a name. Naming babies was easy compared to this ~ after all, there really were only two of us who had the final say ~ but now there are four of us, each with very different ideas of what our new family member's moniker should be. Full Article

Hi Duana, My husband and I have one son, Rio, which was always my dream name and he was kind enough to let me have it. But now we want something that goes along with that for our upcoming daughter and are having a hard time coming up with anything. Like, at all. She is due in about a month, so we would love your input! Our name is two syllables and ends in an 'ee' sound, for reference. Full Article

Hi Duana, I'd love your input on something... During an acquaintance's recent pregnancy, she started referring on Facebook to her unborn baby girl as "Eljay" (her husband's name starts with an J and hers starts with an L). I thought this was just a cutesy nickname for the baby-to-be. Full Article

We're expecting our second child this fall (November). We have decided, like with our first, not to find out the gender of the baby.  We are, however, in desperate need in baby name advice. Here is some background information to help you out. Background information 1: My husband and I are an inter-racial, inter-cultural couple. Full Article

Hi Duana! I love love love all of your name nerd columns!  And while I am not currently preggers, I have to ask you to back off the name Wolfgang.  I totally want to use it for a little dude (if there ever is one) and don't want a ton of Wolfgang's running around at the same time :) Onto the "real" problem - my friend is due in October, and she is having issues with her sister. Full Article

Hey Duana. I'm in need of a name.  Something for a tough girl, but nothing too butch.  I love the look of Zoe, but I hate the sound of it.  Looks tough, sounds like a flower.  I like the boy name idea (Evan, Dylan maybe?), but nothing too try, you know?  Oh, by the way, it's not for a human baby, per se, but I thought you'd have fun with it anyway. Full Article

Hi Duana, My sister-in-law is pregnant and she and my brother found out they are having boy/girl twins. Their first born girl is Mira.  Our last name is traditional Irish/English, hard consonants two syllables.  My sister-in-law is leaning toward Charlotte for baby girl, which meh, feels too popular to me and doesn't go with Mira. Full Article
