Hi Duana, This is a bit of a different situation as I am not the mother to be, but rather the sister in law to the mother to be. I was hoping in your infinite wisdom you might be able to help so that I could too. Long story short, my sister-in-law, we’ll call her J has had a name picked out since childhood, and while the whole family has always been aware of this, her cousin who is a few weeks further along and knows she’s having a girl has just hijacked the name. Full Article

Duana Names: In Which I Outlaw A Name

Hi, Duana, My husband and I are expecting our second girl around the end of Spring. We (meaning, I) like very traditional, classic names. Our first girl is Margaret. (And she goes by Margaret.) Our last name is one syllable, so a multi-syllable first name is a necessity. We also live in the South, so double names are certainly an option. Full Article

Hi Duana, I need help! I am about to adopt the sweetest little dog from a rescue and I am having a hard time deciding on his name (a yorkie-schnauzer cross, with a beautiful red and white blended coat). Currently, he is named Jerome…which I find very cute, yes, but might want to change (one of the fun parts about getting a dog is all the great name possibilities)! Yet, I always feel slightly guilty about changing a dog's name when he is adjusting to a new home, so I thought about maybe adapting it; I noticed that the main syllable/sound in his name is Rome, which could be easily adapted to Romy or Romeo. Full Article

Duana, You are our last hope! We are having a little surprise in two weeks. The girl's name was picked out before we even conceived (Leila Georgie), but if our surprise turns out to be a little boy we are in big trouble. There's nothing we love – names we've mulled over are Charlie, Finlay, Oscar, Ethan, Rory – nothing seems quite right. Full Article

Hi Duana, I am writing on behalf of my sister who is in desperate need of a girl name.  It's her 4th baby so as you can imagine it just gets harder after each one to pick the next name.  This will be the 3rd girl.  The other 3 children are Willa, Rennie (girl - it's a family name) and Charles. Full Article

Hi Duana, I love reading your Name Nerd column! I find it fascinating how names have certain connotations/perceptions and how this spills over to personality formation, career developments, etc... In my situation, my legal name first name is Tri, middle name is Duc, last name is Luong. My full legal name makes it obvious that I am of Asian heritage. Full Article

Duana, please help! I'm expecting my second in early May. We don't know if it will be a boy or girl. We have one daughter named Eliza, which is a pretty special name in my family. I thought it was unusual when we picked it almost 5 years ago, but now I realize it's getting a bit trendy. Full Article

Duana, Our first baby, a girl is due mid-May and we still don't have a name which is stressing me so much that I might go into labor early. I am French and studied French literature at university. I have a long time obsession with Victor Hugo and I always though of the name Esmeralda if I ever had a daughter. Full Article

Hi there, this one is for Duana- We recently made some life changes and moved back to a town to look for a home. Because I don't want to rent in the interim, we are living with my husband's parents (never thought I'd be 33 and living with my in-laws)!!!  I just found out that we are expecting another baby. Full Article

The thing with the updates isn’t just that you tell me I was right or wrong, or that you write in (and between 6-12 months seems to be around when people are able to update, in case you’re waiting on tenterhooks to hear how it went for one letterwriter or another), but that you’re so happy when you do. Full Article

I am due with our first baby in about 6 weeks and am in desperate need of some help with a boy name. We are keeping the sex a surprise, and have been decided on a girl name for months now. For some reason, we are getting no where with a boy name. As someone that has a pretty unique name, I would love for my kid to not have an overly common name as well. Full Article

Duana, We have our first name picked out for our girl both middle name (three syllables and then one). Both are very pretty, classical but not overused - maybe both in the 250 range of most popular. The issue I am having is the last name-hyphenation issue. My boyfriend and I have been together donkeys' years and after many ups, downs and heartaches we might actually be having our take home baby late spring. Full Article

Spring is ploughing ahead, which brought a random query into my head: so April, May, June, August... All very popular names. Why not July then? It's got a nice flow and ring to it, and in so many countries July is the best holiday month - hot and beautiful - so it also comes with great connotations. Full Article

Hi there Duana, I'm due with a boy in about a month and for the last, pretty much 8 months, my husband and I were dead set on a name and, while I read your column religiously, I thought that I would never need your help. But of course now I do! Here's the sitch: we were dead set on having the name Fitz as a first name (our last name also starts with F, but we liked the alliteration). Full Article
