The sins of summer. You all know what I am talking about when I say this, right? Glasses of wine on patios, cocktails on docks, barbeques on boats, and bonfires on beaches all cause us to wonder why our fall wardrobe is just a little snug come autumn. Trust me, I am there with you, as are the majority of my clients, and the common conversation during our workouts right now is the thin layer of extra weight we have somehow managed to coat our skeleton with while away on our summer vacations. Full Article

Hi Hayley.  You've finally made me admit it - the sugar is the reason I have that little bit extra around the middle and thighs. I work out often, I have a healthy lifestyle and I'm happy with my body most days. I eat well, lots of vegetables, nothing fried or too terrible for me.  But I'm not as thin as I could be, and I know that the sugar is to blame. Full Article

Hi Hayley! I need some advice on shoes for training in the gym. My typical workout is a cardio warm-up, weights (either weight machines or free weights) or resistance training, followed by an intense cardio session. One day a week I do an hour of cardio alone (sometimes this is a spinning or fitness class). Full Article

Hi Hayley, Over the years, I've worked with a trainer and come up with a good workout routine that I enjoy and that I'm able to balance with my other commitments - but I find that my job sometimes interferes with my plans for healthy eating. I'm a busy young professional, and my job requires a certain amount of networking, a lot of which takes place over meals. Full Article

Hi! I have been trying to lose the same 10-15 pounds for about 5 years.  I am getting married in 6 months and although I work out 2-4 times a week and eat right, I cannot seem to lose!  I know 'diet pills don't work' and 'you just need to eat right and exercise' but. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I have been working out consistently for the last 4 years and while I have replaced a lot of fat with muscle I still have some extra padding I would love to get rid of. I work out 4-6 times a week (2 high intensity/strength classes, Pilates or a core class, TRX, Cycle and an hour and a half boot camp with cardio, strength, core…). Full Article

Hi Hayley, Your recent core posts inspired me to ask you this question. I am a 36F which has its perks (ha!) but this also means I am very uncomfortable sitting on the floor/stools/benches/anything that won't provide back support. Within 5 minutes my back - particularly in between my shoulder blades - starts to ache like crazy and I'm constantly shifting around and changing my position and can't concentrate on whatever I should be concentrating on. Full Article

I am not and have never been an endurance athlete. My whole life I have been a competitive athlete in sports that are more sprint based. This season I took on a new challenge with Mountain Bike Enduro Racing. These bike races entail both long climbs and quick, sprint descents. The great part is that the uphill sections are not timed, so I can ride at my own pace. Full Article

Hayley, about six months ago I herniated a disc in my lower back (L4-L5). It's honestly been hell. An involuntary six month hiatus from the gym (and all other physical activity) has wreaked havoc on my body, just in time for summer. I've always been athletic and have had a slew of injuries but this was by far the most frustrating experience. Full Article

Hayley, My question is whether it is possible to lose weight while training for a marathon and if so, how. I am currently training for my first marathon this fall, and I am also hoping to lose 10lbs while doing so (the last of my "baby weight"). I have small babies, so time is an issue, I am on a program with a local running group that requires 3-5 runs every week with an option to cross train on one of the 5 days. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I work in a busy bar 4x/week. My hours are 5:30pm to between 12 and 3am.  I bring a large salad to work with protein and fat in it, that I snack on when I can.  I am wondering if, for my schedule is it ok to eat at night when I get home if I am hungry.  I track my calories throughout the day, and I usually am quite under all my caloric goals by the time work is finished. Full Article

Summertime. If you are anything like me, you are outside enjoying everything your city has to offer.  From dawn until dusk I am swimming, paddling, hiking, riding or running and it is not uncommon to find me enjoying the sunset with a much deserved cocktail in my hand. But, why is it that as active as I am I always enter the fall heavier than I left spring? Yes, a lot of it has to do with all of the muscle building activities that I am doing but I would be fooling myself if I thought that was the only reason why my pants are tight come Labour Day. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Learning to run on creaky knees

Hi Hayley, I've never been athletic in my life, but I'd like to start running.  I can walk all day and I try to get in at least half an hour each day, but I'd like to step up my game. I have mild arthritis in my knees which has shown improvement since I started walking daily and lost weight, but it's not severe, so I don't think that should deter me. Full Article

Hi Hayley, 11 months after I had my baby I realized I had diastasis recti- not too bad- 2.5-2 finger widths.  Unfortunately I have been doing crunches, planks and everything you should not be doing for almost a year.  When I try to research this online I get very stressed because I can't find solid facts on this, and some sites suggest that because I've been crunching so long, my abs have now healed open like this. Full Article
