Duana asked me last night how my ma, the Chinese Squawking Chicken, reacted to the announcement of my upcoming book about her, Listen To The Squawking Chicken. Well, she came over yesterday when I was at work to drop off some ginseng soup. Normally she doesn’t come inside because she blames my dogs for getting their fur all over her clean clothes. But she had to pee and used the upstairs bathroom, my bathroom. I left in a rush in the morning and it was a hair wash day so there was long black hair all over the tub. The only thing she said to Jacek during the entire visit was, “If you’re not going to clean your house every day you should hire a cleaning service”. And then she hobbled her way out the door. I wrote a book, but the Squawking Chicken still thinks I’m a filthy pig. Read Full Intro
Entertainment Weekly has the first photos of Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan “in character” as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey in Fifty Shades Of Grey, now pushed back 6 months to open in February for Valentine’s Day 2015. As you can see, Johnson’s Anastasia is all reticent and innocent sex. Full Story
Shameless self-promotion here but this was the deadline I’ve been referring to. I was writing a book. I WROTE A BOOK! The book is called "Listen to the Squawking Chicken: When Mother Knows Best, What's a Daughter To Do? A Memoir (Sort Of)”. So now you know who the true star is here: the Chinese Squawking Chicken. The big movie release this month is Catching Fire. There was a time however that November belonged to the Harry Potter movies. The first and second films in the franchise came out in November. Out of the series of 8, a total of 4 of them were November opens. So I associate November with Harry Potter, and London too, since I was sent there for junketing several years in a row, both for the theatrical releases and the DVD launches.
It felt right then to see these pictures of JK Rowling with Emma Watson this November at a fundraiser for Lumos on Saturday at the Warner Bros Harry Potter Tour. The event raised over a million pounds in support of orphans around the world. You know who else was there?
Hey generic Canadian readers – Ron Burgundy wants you to know he’s written the book of the year. LET ME OFF AT THE TOP: My Classy Life and Other Musings is due out on November 19. Here’s how the press release reads:
“Ron Burgundy has taken the time to write a book. We owe it to him, as honest citizens, to read it. This may well be the most thrilling book ever written, by a man of great physical, moral and spiritual strength and not surprisingly a great literary talent as well. This book deserves a real shot at a Pulitzer Prize. In fact if it doesn’t win one then we will finally have proof that the Pulitzer is rigged.”
At my house, Ron Burgundy is spoken about with the same reverence as Cate Blanchett. So it’s our honour (or more like Jacek’s honour) to bring you this Canadian exclusive message from Ron Burgundy himself. Read Full Intro
Carrie Underwood was at the TJ Martell Foundation Gala last night in New York. She’s in town because she’s working on The Sound Of Music, the live television production of The Sound Of Music to air on NBC in December. In which she’s playing Maria von Trapp. Interestingly enough, Maria von Trapp came up in a conversation I had yesterday with Bridget Jones author Helen Fielding at Indigo Full Story
Today is Allegiant day. I’m anxious. For several reasons. First – word is Veronica Roth is unsparing. So there will be losses. And there should be losses. If losses happen in the wizarding world, they sure as sh-t happen in dystopia. But also...and this is my own problem…I’m on a deadline and can’t, shouldn’t, start reading it until the weekend. I should be working when I get home tonight. Discipline is cruel. Discipline you f-cking bitch I hate you.
But at least it’s picking up…
The top story today is not an engagement. Before the engagement, Kanye West was at the Hollywood Film Awards with real celebrities where he honoured 12 Years A Slave’s Steve McQueen. Lupita Nyong’o accepted the New Hollywood Award. Lee Daniels, Michael B Jordan, and Daniel Oyelowo were recognised too. And Forest Whitaker, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Barkhad Abdi from Captain Phillips showed up to present. Sh-t, Hollywood. Are you actually trying to be diverse?
More coverage from the Hollywood Film Awards to follow. JULIA was there. We will talk about this.
Yours in gossip,
Have you read Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell? Here’s my only complaint about the book: since I read it on my iPad, I couldn’t properly hug it. Hugging an iPad isn’t the same as hugging a real book. And as corny as it sounds, it deserves to be hugged. Eleanor is a big girl with big red hair. Park is an Asian boy who doesn’t fit in in Nebraska. Not enough people are writing stories about these kinds of people. And when someone does actually write a story about people we know, and can relate to, people we might all have been at one point or another, the Parents Action League decides to ban it. Because the teenagers are dropping too many swears. And they kiss and grope each other.
Sure. Let’s ignore all the beauty that we can share with each other through words – the power of friendship to bring us through the bleakest of experiences, the hope it can give you when you’ve been accustomed to despair, the opportunities it can present when nothing seems possible – and get all huffy because a 16 year old decides to express her frustration by cursing. J.K. Rowling announced yesterday that she would write the script for Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, a movie set in New York, some 70-odd years before Harry Potter, and starring Newt Scamander. You’ve had 24 hours to process the following information: - Yes, there is wizarding activity in North America. Full Story
You ready? The long weekend is over. Summer is over. Gossip high season is before us. NY Fashion Week begins tomorrow. TIFF begins on Thursday. The Emmys are less than 3 weeks away. (Should we live-blog the show?) So the blog will be busy. And we had a taste of the seasonal gossip acceleration yesterday with the casting announcement for Fifty Shades Of Grey. More on this later.
Many of you have been writing to request more book recommendations. How many books do you read at once? I usually have two going at the same time. There’s the book you rip through, that doesn’t take very long, and then the book you spend an hour with every night, slowly. Sometimes you just want to make it last longer, to honour the care and the commitment of the author; sometimes it’s because the story is so devastating you have to take your time; sometimes it’s because you’re trying to convince yourself that by the time you’re done, the world might not be as cruel as the one that’s been written; and sometimes the book is like life, and it takes time to process. It’s been 15 years. Since when? Since many of us first met Harry Potter and went to Hogwarts. To celebrate the anniversary, JK Rowling is sharing some of her memories about writing the series and specifically who she misses the most: Dumbledore. The video is below.
When someone is awesome, we are compelled, for some reason, to search for their “next”. Who is the “next” JK Rowling? They’re now saying it could be Samantha Shannon. Shannon is 21 years old. She already has a 6 figure book deal for a 7 book series, the first of which, The Bone Season, was just released. Have you read it yet? I just started so I can’t say yet whether or not Shannon is what I like to call a First Book Bitch Read Full Intro
Have you read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak? I referenced The Book Thief exactly 3 years ago here in a post arguing in favour of YA – that it’s underrated, that it’s ignorant to dismiss it on the basis of its classification, because otherwise you’d be deprived of a work like The Book Thief, as profound, complex, and insightful as any so-called adult literature, and arguably more accessible.
The Book Thief has become a movie. The first trailer was released yesterday. The film opens in November. So watch the preview and then read the book – you have time. I promise this story will lift you.
And then there’s How I Live Now. Read Full Intro
Drew Barrymore is putting out a book of all hearts photography. Like an entire book of pictures of hearts. Page after page of hearts. Apparently she’s been taking pictures of hearts for 10 years. Now she’s curated her heart collection and wants to share the images with you. What!? But Taylor Swift totally wanted to do that! Said Drew of her heart affinity: “I have always loved hearts.
