Girls Season 5 finale Episodes 9 and 10 recap First things first:  My longing for Jenny Slate’s haircut. I wanted it when she first got it, snapped back to my senses, and this episode has renewed my love. Please know that I have forced my curly hair into submission for years and I cannot be allowed to do this. Full Story

Girls Season 5 Episode 8 recap  Empathy, revulsion. Empathy, revulsion. It’s such a perfectly balanced equation—you can’t have Hannah or Marnie or even Jessa or Shoshanna without both in equal measure. Empathy, revulsion. Just when I’m feeling one, I cycle rapidly toward the other – more in this episode than in any for at least a season. Full Story

Girls Season 5 Episode 7 recap  God, I love Ray so much. Do you think that he has a mansplaining monologue about the dangers of mansplaining? Because I know he does, and I really want to hear it. I will listen to him Deep Internet any day. Even though he says things like ‘you deal with this one’. Full Story

Girls Season 5 Episode 6 recap Ohhhh, this was such a great episode. I knew as soon as Desi repeated “recoiled from my touch” that we were getting to the real truth of the thing, mainly that you can be way too much, like Marnie Michaels is, and still not be able to deal with the way too much that is Desi. Full Story

Girls Season 5 Episode 5 recap One of the reasons the scenes with Hannah’s parents have always been so good is that she doesn’t pretend when she’s with them. The ‘Brooklyn Hannah’ attitude that allows her to inform people about the conscious choices she’s making in reading material for her junior high students or sexual liberation with a yoga instructor kind of fades away because her parents already know who she is, and love her anyway. Full Story

Girls Season 5 Episode 4 recap The Girls of five years ago would have set this weeks’ relationships on fire and walked away. Their patience in the face of things not being easy (and really, when are things ever easy in a relationship?) is due to…maturity? Increased patience? Increased experience? …The feeling that any bad relationship is better than being alone? I’m not saying that’s for sure, but the show sure hints at it, where Marnie outright tells Hannah not to break up with Fran because she’ll have to ‘start all over again’. Full Story

Girls Season 5 Episode 2 and 3 recap Let’s talk about how Girls is incorporating the realities of friends who correspond in a digital way much more naturally than almost any show on television. I don’t mean the bit about naked exes you keep in your phone, but about the natural way you FaceTime with whomever (I assume the Skype sounds were specifically for work-oriented calls from Aidy Bryant, who I am delighted with on this show). Full Story

Girls Season 5 Episode 1 recap Here was my thought as I watched the season premiere of Girls: even knowing that Marnie was going to be ridiculous because = bride, I was surprised by how real everything felt. That is, each individual reaction isn’t that outsized. Yes, Marnie’s a cliché—but anyone who has ever criticized Allison Williams’ acting has never met someone as brittle as Marnie. Full Story

Girls Season 4 Episode 10 recap Everything is perfect, until it isn’t. I know how elementary it seems, but I appreciated how delicately Girls approached this theme in their season finale, which was mostly devoid of the guest stars who trod so heavily over this season, and kind of hardcore what the show has always been. Full Story

I do not feel sympathy for Jessa (which in itself feels wonderful)

Girls Season 4 Episode 9 recap How could you feel sympathy for Jessa? You can’t! It’s glorious! In fact, maybe it’s a brilliant ploy on behalf of Dunham and Co. to make you see that you have to hate Adam – even though he was with Mimi-Rose who was weirdly unobjectionable – because he did the same thing Jessa did: took up with a narcissistic freak who considers a relationship ‘material’ to be worked on. Full Story

Girls Season 4 Episode 8 recap I read something recently that said Lena Dunham hopes to leave the characters in Girls ‘better than we found them’, like a campsite. It’s not so unusual a concept, but on a show like this, that seems to revel in the continual return of the characters to their most ridiculous selves, it’s surprising. Full Story
