Hands down the best movie I’ve seen at TIFF, Spotlight is a phenomenal film, absolutely pitch perfect from start to finish. This could be my whole review—this film is flawless and if it doesn’t affect you, then you are a monster. It will break your heart. It will make you so, SO angry. Full Story

We must be approaching award season because the fall festivals have announced their lineups, led by TIFF, and now we’re starting to get trailers for the Oscar baity movies we’ll be watching in the fall. There’s a lot of good-looking stuff coming up, but the one film I’m most looking forward to—and have been since it was first announced—is Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, about the Boston Globe breaking the story of the Catholic priest sex abuse scandal. Full Story

Michael Keaton, Sean Penn, and Alejandro González Iñárritu: Oscar boys being boys

Everything about the Best Picture win for Birdman was a little odd. I’m not one of those people who hated the film – in fact I thought it was great.  But the whole weird round-robin guyfest on the acceptance stage gave me a bit of a stomach ache. First of all, the ‘special guest' who was promised to present best picture was…Sean Penn? In our viewing before he came out, we were throwing around ideas like Stephen Hawking, or remembering when it was Michelle Obama a couple of years back. Full Story

Michael Keaton’s last minute push

This Best Actor race is the tightest category face-off in years. Like Lainey wrote yesterday, it might be too close to call. But since Oscar voting ends on Tuesday, the top three contenders — Eddie Redmayne, Michael Keaton and Bradley Cooper — are now in the final phase of campaigning, which means it's time to kiss babies. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

If you think the Best Actor Oscar race between Michael Keaton and Eddie Redmayne is too close to call, will this change your mind? Michael Keaton is a Rabbit. During the Year of the Goat/Sheep, only 3 signs out of the 12 signs are on a luck run.  Read Full Intro

Boyhood won the BAFTA last night. But on Saturday, the Directors Guild picked Birdman. The DGAs are considered a very, very, VERY good predictor of Oscar Best Picture; only 7 times in history have the DGA and the Academy picked differently. Even still, Boyhood has its share of support. So with a week to go before the voting period closes, it’s a legitimate race. Full Story

There was a great article in the New York Times that came out just after the Golden Globes: What Happened to Risk on the Red Carpet? With few exceptions – thank you Emma Stone, again, and again, and again – everything, everyone is boring. Full Story

I don’t understand why Birdman keeps getting categorized as a comedy. It’s weird and has its funny moments, but it’s not a comedy. And yet at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards it was classified as a comedy. I’m fine with splitting drama and comedy categories for award purposes, but if that’s going to happen then can you please nominate actual comedies and not dramas that have some humorous dialogue? It defeats the purpose of the split categories if all you’re doing is ignoring actual comedies in order to sneak in more dramatic nominees. Full Story

The race for Best Actor will be between Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Eddie Redmayne this year. All three were at the Hollywood Film Awards. All three received awards at the Hollywood Film Awards. Jesus, is this show business or is this grade school? As we’ve seen, Keaton had the early lead in this category since Venice. Full Story

Birdman is a tremendous film. There’s no other way to put it. It’s an ASTOUNDING technical accomplishment and a genuinely affecting film that is funny, absurd, moving, and sad. The performances are fantastic, the score is terrific, and where Clouds of Sils Maria gets bogged down in the pedantics of actors talking about acting (click here Full Story

Joanna sent me a link from ONTD this morning - third week of September, a fan posted these photos from the set of Demolition, starring Jake Gyllenhaal. You have to scroll down that link to see the shots in question but Rachel McAdams is in a couple of them even though she’s not in the movie. Full Story

The Birdman trailer has just been released, the latest from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and starring Michael Keaton in what many are calling his “comeback”. Birdman also features Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts (who did outstanding work on Inarritu’s 21 Grams), Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, and Emma Stone. Full Story
