So gracious, so charming, so popular – easily the most popular last night at the Critics’ Choice Awards as everyone wanted a moment with her…because Lupita Nyong’o is definitely having a moment right now. And she won the Best Supporting Actress award over American Sweethearts Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence which makes Saturday even more interesting. If Lupita can take it at the SAGs, just as Academy voters are filling in their ballots, we might just see her ride that all the way to the Dolby Theatre on March 2. And I can’t wait to see what she’s wearing. Last night it was a white Calvin Klein and I actually prefer over the red cape from the Golden Globes. It was lovely, yes. But as you know, red on a red carpet will never take me over the edge.
Watch her acceptance speech below. Come on, how can anyone not vote for Lupita?
As for the rest of it – 12 Years A Slave took Best Picture and one acting category but both Gravity and American Hustle had big wins too. Hustle’s momentum, on the strength of leading the Oscar nominations and placing in all four acting categories, seems to be gaining. But I wonder. I wonder if the Academy might award other movies with the directing and the writing and the screenplay honours and STILL pick 12 Years A Slave to win the big, big prize. It’s certainly not the usual pattern, but that’s the film title you want engraved on the plaque leading into the theatre in perpetuity, isn’t it?
So. Flowers In The Attic – don’t forget, Duana and I will be liveblogging it on Saturday night. Join us! A full SAG wrap-up will follow on Monday.
Have a great weekend!
