Dear Gossips,

Everyone is talking about Boyhood. They’re calling it a “masterpiece”. They’re saying that director Richard Linklater has made “cinematic history”. They’re claiming that it’s never been done before, that Linklater has redefined the way childhood is portrayed in film. It’s currently rating at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. I have colleagues, jaded, cynical assholes who’ve worked in the business for decades, who are coming out of this movie saying they’ve been transformed.

Boyhood was shot over 12 years with the same actors, documenting the real-time (scripted) journey of one kid and his family. I’ve not seen it yet because it doesn’t open in Toronto until this weekend and the week after in other parts of Canada. But they’re calling for Oscar. They’re pushing for consideration. With the kind of acclaim Boyhood is already receiving, and the grassroots support that will no doubt follow when more and more people screen the film, it might be the little one who takes on the big players during award season.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
