It’s Golden Globes weekend. Michael B Jordan has not been nominated and Creed was not included in the film categories, its only nomination was for Sylvester Stallone as Best Supporting Actor – which will be one of the best speeches of the night if he wins, I promise you. MBJ is also not on the list of presenters either so there’s really no reason for him to go to the show. Full Story

Please tell me you’ve seen Creed. Creed was my favourite movie of 2015. It was on Sarah’s Top 10 of 2015 – click here if you missed that. And it was a box office success, honouring the Rocky franchise’s legacy and introducing it to a new generation. Full Story

This is what I mean when I say I’m torn. Because I love Idris. But this won’t be Idris’s only opportunity, only award season. For Sylvester Stallone as Rocky, well, it’s not going to happen again. And so far it’s my favourite story of award season, as you know, because I can’t shut up about it. Full Story

Creed opens on Wednesday just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday box office in the United States. The early reviews are solid. Actually, more than solid. Some are saying this is the best installment in the Rocky franchise since the original. Um. EXCUSE ME. Better than Rocky IV? When Rocky punched out Communism? As I’ve written, many, many times already, Rocky IV is my favourite. Full Story

There have been several prestige films that were supposed to take off this award season and become contenders for Oscar and they haven’t delivered. Our Brand Is Crisis kinda bombed this weekend. Nobody cared about the Steve Jobs movie even though the critics (mostly) loved it. Nobody noticed Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Walk. Full Story

Michael B. Jordan’s most excellent apology

Celebrity apologies usually come in two flavors: 1) I’m sorry you’re upset, and 2) I’m sorry I got caught (sub-category; I’m sorry you misunderstood). Owning personal responsibility is, depressingly, rare in this strata of humanity, but when Michael B. Jordan found himself the target of public outrage, he offered up a thoughtful apology the likes of which we rarely see from celebrities. Full Story

The smooth, calculated Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan is one of three cover profiles in October’s GQ, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Rob Lowe. The interview itself is a good read, especially as Jordan has maintained a pretty low profile on his way up these past few years. It’s possible to know him as a Young Actor On The Rise, but not really have any idea of him as a celebrity persona. Full Story

The writing was on the wall, but even amid downgraded expectations, Fantastic Four managed a spectacular belly-flop over the weekend. Dismal reviews and bad word of mouth—the movie got a C- from CinemaScore—led to a dismal $26.1 million opening weekend Full Story

More like Un-Fantastic Four

August 10, 2015 14:02:36 Posted at August 10, 2015 14:02:36

Well, Fantastic Four really sh*t the bed this weekend. All the problems plaguing the movie behind the scenes and dogging its disastrous release will be dealt with in a separate post, so that here we can simply focus on the final product, which is just the worst. It’s wrong-headed from the get, a giant f*ck you to both the idea of narrative consistency and the audience for having the temerity to expect a superhero movie—a genre about people with fantastical powers flying around and saving the world—to be any fun at all. Full Story
