Tilda Swinton was honoured last night at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was also her 53rd birthday. Look at her. She is ageless. She is spectacular. How spectacular? Karl Lagerfeld was her date. Like, HE had to accompany HER to the event. Karl doesn’t gift that out to just anyone. Full Story
After premiering at Cannes and screening at TIFF, Only Lovers Left Alive, aka the vampire movie with Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton, finally has a trailer. And it looks funny, maybe? Funny is not a word I would use to describe writer/director Jim Jarmusch—usually I would go with obtuse, difficult, not for everyone. Full Story

When I wrote about the first Snowpiercer trailer (there is now a second one that is only slightly more illuminating), I mentioned that The Weinstein Company bought it, and that if it caught Harvey Weinstein’s eye, it had to be more than just the action movie the trailer was making it out to be. There were two movies I was really looking forward to this year by a pair of South Korean directors getting some English-language work -- Stoker and Snowpiercer. Park Chan-wook’s Stoker turned out completely freaking amazing, and now we’re getting our first look at Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, which many had tipped for Cannes but was not ready in time for consideration. With Steven Spielberg, never the most controversial or daring filmmaker in a room, as the jury president, many expected the Cannes prizes to go to Hollywood-friendly films, but Spielberg surprised many when his jury picked the French film Blue is the Warmest Colour, adapted from a French graphic novel about a girl falling in love with an older woman, for the Palme d’Or. Has there ever been a case before where one celebrity had the best magazine cover, art installation, and boyfriend in all of Hollywood at the same time? Because that’s what Tilda Swinton is pulling off right now, and she’s making it look way too easy. Here she is pictured out in NY, appearing both in love and like a quintessentially chic member of the Avant-guard. Full Story
Moonrise Kingdom opened Cannes last night. Photos of the cast on the carpet at the Palais including Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, and Edward Norton, who looked sooooooo great and so fresh and not truculent at all, are attached. And how was it?
I love Wes Anderson movies. If you love Wes Anderson movies, you’ll probably love Moonrise Kingdom too. I LOVED it. Yes, he is so full of random it borders on pretentious and can, for some, feel smug. No I can’t argue against those who would insist that he’s odd by choice and as such not really odd but artificial. Not that I agree, but it’s pointless to argue. Or, rather, that is the point. There will never be a Show Me The Money! moment in a Wes Anderson movie. This time however there is some emotion. A lot of it. In place of the detachment that accompanies much of his work, Anderson’s Moonrise is devastatingly heartfelt. Read Full Intro
(Lainey: I’m still catching up after flying overnight to Cannes. Trying to rush out a few new articles but let’s start first with Sarah’s Cannes preview since they’re all starting to arrive. I screen Moonrise Kingdom tonight. Attached - the cast at the photo call today.) The Cannes Film Festival is always glamorous and Hollywood is always well represented, but this year seems particularly heavy on the star power, headed, of course, by the Brange. Full Story

A severe side part, height around the crown, and some body. I wish I could be so...brave. My excuse is that my hair doesn’t grow like that. I know this because I tried it. At 12. And again at 19. Which is when you have the balls for it. And the youth to be able to play it off. I recommend this... Just once. Full Story

Last night in Milan at the Vertu Global Launch of the Constellation, whatever that means, here are Uma Thurman - looking amazing - and Tilda Swinton looking like Tilda so, obviously, awesome, and the both need to stand up straight because I want to see who’s taller.Celebrities, as you know, are always smaller in real life. Am writing this open having just come from the 830am press screening for We Need To Talk About Kevin. Maybe not the most uplifting way to start the day. Feeling very...unsettled. But we now have a major contender for the Palme d'Or. And for Best Actress. At least in my mind. Tilda Swinton is extraordinary. As for the film - if you read the book, you need to see it. I'll have more thoughts on it at a later date, once I go through my notes and, well, start writing on a laptop as opposed to a blackberry but suffice to say - they did not f-ck it up. Lynne Ramsay definitely did not f-ck it up. And goddamn it was so beautifully shot.
As I was exiting the theatre - and it was packed, being the only British entry in competition at the festival I think - I overheard a journalist remarking that "the applause seemed to be reluctant". Read Full Intro
I almost didn’t recognise Hayden Christensen, here with Tilda Swinton and Chloe Sevigny in Berlin at the Hugo Boss show. Too much beer? Hayden’s face normally has a few more angles. Dylan says it’s democracy at work, that women aren’t the only ones who lose their cheekbones at a certain age. Full Story
