Dear Gossips,

Shonda Rhimes is underrated. People fall on their knees for the Matt Weiners and the Vince Gilligans but Shonda Rhimes? Duana posted about Shonda not too long ago in a piece called How To Get Away With An Empire – click here for a refresher. I posted about her amazing Dartmouth commencement speech in the summer – click here for a refresher.

But for all This Woman has done, she still doesn’t get the kind of love reserved for the heavy hitters, the men behind shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad. So the New York Times tried to give her some. By praising her for reclaiming the Angry Black Woman.

People have been talking about Alessandra Stanley’s article all weekend. It was criticised in Vulture, in Salon, pretty much everywhere for being lazy, offensive, patronising…YES. All those things.

But what’s most disturbing to me is the idea that Stanley would have filed this piece with a lot of pride. She wasn’t cackling over her laptop when she was typing this out, the evil racist knowingly spewing out her ignorant bullsh-t. No. Not at all. That would be the devil you know.

What’s scary is that she thought she was doing Shonda Rhimes a favour. She thought her words were complimentary. She actually believed that she was gifting Shonda Rhimes with her approval. It’s the racism version of a sheep in wolf’s clothing, in many ways much more dangerous than a man in a white pointy-hooded robe with the eyes cut out. At least with that guy you can identify him right away. At least with that guy you can arm yourself in advance. It’s not as easy to defend yourself against a stereotype that’s shoved in your face by the New York Times, the paper of record. How the f-ck did this get past the editorial board at the New York Times? And since it did, what does it say about the braintrust over at the New York Times???

Here are Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and Ellen Pompeo this weekend promoting ABC’s Thursday night lineup. As previously mentioned – click here for a refresher -- I’ve been waiting all summer for How To Get Away With Murder. Only 3 more sleeps!

Yours in gossip,

Been waiting for a chance to tell you how excited I am about How To Get Away With Murder. Viola Davis is coming to Thursday night television! Spouting sexy legal phrases and kicking our asses in great leather zip-up jackets and heels! They’re saying the show is quick and requires an attention span – that is, you might miss something if you’re tweeting during a scene. Full Story

Viola Davis: Best Oscar First Arrival

Thankless. It’s thankless to be first on the carpet. Firstly, you know that your reps put you out there as an early bargaining chip. They need someone recognizable and reliable but not too exciting to arrive early so that nobody turns off the TV. So you’re the anchor, but then on social media, everyone’s like ‘enough already, who cares, what was she thinking wearing that anyway?’ Which is why Davis’ easy-breezy “here I am, what do you need to know” attitude is so useful. Full Story

They’re shooting a movie together… Don’t look at me. You think I understand? It’s called Lila & Eve. They’re mothers. Their kids are killed in a driveby. The authorities are impotent, unwilling, not helpful. So it’s Mom Vigilantes. You know, I think maybe I changed my mind. Full Story

Viola Davis: Best Oscar Hair but...

And they say there are no surprises...This year, the BAFTAs knew better than the SAGs. It’s not that Meryl was a long shot. Of course not. As you know, leading up to yesterday, it was a RACE, a legitimate race. But Viola had built up so much momentum and The Iron Lady was such a terrible movie, Viola was indeed favoured on Sunday morning. Full Story

Winning every weekend

Viola Davis was honoured by the NAACP on Friday night in LA. Orange looks amazing on her. And the accessories are beautiful too. But the breasts all out like that and so, um, smushed... I just think maybe it cheapens someone who is never, ever cheap. Much better on Sunday at the Writers Guild Awards, lovely in black and white by RAOUL, with Octavia Spencer, who also seems to be collecting an award every weekend, with The Help director Tate Taylor. Full Story

Viola in pink

Viola Davis has been working a lot of colour this award season. There’s been an orange, a green, a white with gold accent, but she seems to prefer pink. Pink has been chosen several times, actually. Some brighter than others. So far, no major metallics. What will be for the Oscars then? Gold? White? Or does she go back to the brights? Viola did not win Best Actress last night. Full Story

She was the Best Actress at Critics’ Choice. And she won the SAG Award last night. Suddenly Viola Davis has edged ahead of both Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams for Oscar Best Actress making it tight race to the Kodak. Did you see the Streep’s face? She was delighted. Genuinely delighted. As for Michelle Williams. Full Story

The Help is surging

The Artist may have won Best Film and Best Director last night but The Help’s victories in acting ensemble and lead and supporting actresses gave it a huge boost as we head toward Oscar nomination day on January 24. The Help is exactly the kind of film the Academy would love to honour. Remember Crash? Crash was a gross simplification. Full Story

George’s friendly covers

Earlier this week, George Clooney shared the cover of Vanity Fair with Matt Damon and Daniel Craig - click here for a refresher. Now he’s collaborating with Viola Davis in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. See now this, this is a campaign strategy that’s so much more palatable than Stacy Keibler/Elisabetta Canalis/Sarah Larson/substitute leggy medium pretty escort. Full Story

The New York Film Critics Circle announced their winners today and the Spirit Awards also released their list of nominees which means the Oscar races are starting to take shape. The NBR will reveal on Thursday, and more and more critics circles will follow in the coming days and weeks, giving a clearer picture of what to expect from the Academy but the purpose of what happened today in New York, as they intended, was to blow out of the gate first. Full Story

Many of you have emailed today about the ELLE Women in Hollywood Tribute last night questioning certain recipients. None of you however questioned Viola Davis. Davis was honoured (and received a standing ovation) for her outstanding contribution to film and it was also revealed that she and her husband have adopted a baby girl called Genesis. Full Story

Viola in the right category

Wenn, Splash

Viola Davis was joined by Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer, and director Tate Taylor to promote The Help in Madrid today. Right now she’s an early lock for one of the five spots in the Best Actress category for the Oscar. NOT Supporting. Best. And word is she campaigned for that. Supposedly she insisted on her role being considered in the lead category even though some say she’d have a better shot at it if nominated in Supporting. Full Story

The Help trailer

I read the book like everyone else who reads books on lists. I thought it was … OK. It certainly didn’t change my life or anything. Found the ending rather underwhelming. And, well, I have some serious fundamental issues with it that, um, are probably best left to another discussion. So I guess I’m not as excited about the movie as others may be. Full Story
