Carey Mulligan covers the new ELLE UK ahead of the release Suffragette in which she stars alongside Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter. This is the magazine’s feminism issue. And this week, many of you have been emailing me about Meryl and Marion Cotillard, and their responses to questions about being feminists. Full Story
You know the kind of movie your parents suggest watching when you’re visiting, and you agree to watch it because you know it’s relatively harmless entertainment that won’t include a graphic sex scene or anything similarly mortifying to watch with your parents? But then you end up pretending like you don’t actually like it because you’re not supposed to get sucked into the kind of populist maudlin tripe that’s made to appeal to white middle-aged suburban parents, except you do like it because goddamn it, it’s just so earnest and heartfelt that it works, even if it is crazy cheesy? And when it’s over and your parents ask if you like it, you downplay your reaction and go, “It was okay, I guess. Full Story
The hashtag #squadgoals often appears in wanderlust Instagram captions about a power posse, but it’s best paired with the two new Suffragette trailers. Carey! Meryl! The HBC! They're the HBICs fighting for a vote for women in the film – I’m all in. "We break windows, we burn things," Carey's character Maud says in the trailer. Full Story
A trailer for the upcoming Ricki and The Flash was released yesterday starring Meryl Streep as a rock star. Which basically means Meryl Streep will be nominated for more. And she totally should be. As usual, she’s amazing. But so is Audra McDonald. And that’s another bonus. Another? Written by Diablo Cody. Oh and… Rick Springfield. Ha.
It’s a little…what’s the word?... schmaltzy, for sure. But Meryl’s got what looks like an American flag tattooed on her back. I feel like that might make up for the schmaltz. The movie comes out August 7th which hasn’t traditionally been the strongest month for releases. But in recent years, we’ve seen some winners emerging from August. So let’s not yet hold August against Ricki. The hair-combs at the back of her head on the other hand…
Now those can stay in the 80s.

On paper, would you ever consider giving Carey Mulligan top billing over Meryl Streep for a movie? Their star power and cinematic trajectories couldn’t be more different. But that’s what happens in the first trailer for Suffragette, which was released today. It’s a first look at what many are calling an awards season favourite. Full Story

I did not see that coming from Patricia Arquette. I thought that, if she made a ‘statement’ in her speech, which we all knew she was going to get to do, that it would be about women, and how it’s hard to be a mother, and respecting the quiet people in your life – akin to what Simmons said, and to what Arquette has said in past interviews. You know, she understands the role she’s supposed to play. Remember Sunset Boulevard? Remember how much Norma understood about the business and what was required? Julia Roberts is not Norma Desmond. Not yet. But she knows what it is that’s required of her, and it’s a few things. Full Story
Into The Woods New York premiere last night. Meryl Streep was there. This is all that matters. And look at her. I love this outfit. I love it even more than she didn’t pass her handbag off to an assistant and kept it with her on the carpet. The handbag is a proper handbag too. Not an accessory clutch, not a stylish cigarette and lipstick holder but an over-the-shoulder, gets in the way of posing if you’re Victoria Beckham BAG. Full Story

Hugh Grant was in Austria yesterday at the opening of Gut Aiderbichl Christmas Market holding on to a goat. Is that a goat? I think he’s also promoting a movie. European press tours are so weird. Did you know he’s doing a movie with Meryl Streep next year? It’s the Florence Foster Jenkins biopic to be directed by Stephen Frears. Full Story
Okay, as you may have gleaned from life and people who sing Rent on the subway, there are several tiers of musical theatre fans. Some who think they love musicals because they watched the VHS tape of Annie, and another version who performed in Pippin growing up and will defend it to the death, and the third version is people who are into musicals you’ve never heard of and have reams of Broadway sheet music stuffed into drawers in their homes and understand the meaning of “recitative”.
