The Road Less Taken

Viggo Mortensen is looking dandy as ever in this svelte black suit and pristine white shirt. And his hair looks so healthy and luscious, you know he likes to sit down in front of a mirror at night and brush it exactly 1000 times like Marcia Brady would do.

As promised, Viggo is currently making the rounds at TIFF promoting the new film The Road, which also stars Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce. I have not read the book, but Lainey has and proclaims it to be the most depressing thing she’s ever laid eyes on – with the exception of Ed Westwick’s new tattoos, of course.

According to the one-line summary at IMDB, the film is “a post-apocalyptic tale of a man and his son trying to survive by any means possible.” Great. That’s just what I need. Especially after watching some doomsday special over on the History Channel late one night. 2012, anyone?

Still, the movie looks Oscar-worthy, since the book it’s based on is by the same author of No Country for Old Men.

And though she hasn’t had a chance to interview him, Lainey did get a glimpse of him in the hotel lobby, stepping into the elevator. “Weirdo” and “eccentric” were two words she used in her description, but in a good way! Apparently he also likes to carry around a straw bag with him; you know, the kind your grandmother would take to the market.

I like the fact that he does his own thing and doesn’t give a crap what people think. Even from his choice of film roles, he has opted to go his own route, taking roles that are challenging and interesting, when he could have easily sold out and done mindless action movies after the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Good on ya, Viggo! And if he wants to do another Turkish bath house fight scene, who am I to say no?

The Road opens October 16.
