Certain corners of the internet have been damp down there after seeing this photo of Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Fassbender getting down at the FOX after-party on Sunday night following the Golden Globes celebrating the Best Drama win for 12 Years A Slave. I would be damp if Chiwetel Ejiofor was in the shot. Full Story

How responsible are we, really?

Reader Jackie sent an email this morning about Benedict Cumberbatch that basically boiled down to, “Benedict Cumberbatch seems to be skating along the edge of other people’s bad decisions, so when does that become a problem for him?” (Emphasis mine). Her examples:  playing a white-washed role in Star Trek Into Darkness (Khan, who, it should be noted, has never been played by an Indian actor), the whole Fifth Estate Full Story

Sherlock doesn’t approve

Of John’s comedy mustache. It’s T-minus forty days until Sherlock series 3 premieres in the US, or, as I like to put it, T-minus twenty-two days until we all pirate it (“The Empty Hearse” is scheduled to air on New Year’s Day in the UK). Why do they insist on this window between airings? Do they actually think we’re going to wait three whole weeks to learn how Sherlock survived The Fall? Because while John may say he doesn’t care how, only why, we, the audience, already know why (to save you, John!). Full Story

The (almost) year of Benedict Cumberbatch

The Hollywood Reporter put Benedict Cumberbatch on the cover a few months ago, declaring him officially part of the A List. Click here to read Sarah’s piece at the time. All signs did indeed point, then, to it being the Year of Cumberbatch, especially since The Fifth Estate was about to screen at TIFF and everyone was already talking Oscar. Full Story

Maybe it’s because I’ve been listening to the words “eat pussy” come out of Rob Ford’s mouth all morning but suddenly everything seems brighter, nicer, easier to look at. Seth Meyers is apparently strongly considering making it a sketch on Saturday Night Live this weekend. Full Story

Benedict’s box office boo-boo

So we’ve already discussed today how box office tracking is usually full of sh*t (click here for a refresher), but there is a threshold where it simply doesn’t matter how wonky the numbers are—you can’t deny when a movie sh*ts the bed. Full Story

Good Morning Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch was on Good Morning America today presumably to promote The Fifth Estate. Julian Assange borrowed from Sinead O’Connor this week and wrote a hissy fit open letter to Cumberbatch about his portrayal. Thanks for the publicity, Julian. Don’t you know? Or does he know and that’s the point? Too heavy before a long weekend. Full Story

He’s played real life mathematicians (Stephen Hawking) and imaginary ones (in The Last Enemy), and Very Smart People real and imagined (Julian Assange and Sherlock Holmes), and now The Batch is filming The Imitation Game, a movie about mathematician Alan Turing and his efforts to code-break the Enigma Machine during World War II. Full Story

Welcome to the A-list, Benedict Cumberbatch

If 2011 was The Year of The Fassbender, then 2013 is The Year of The Batch. With a blockbuster (Star Trek Into Darkness), another installment of the popular TV show that made him (Sherlock), and a trio of Oscar-y projects that showcase his talents from period drama to modern leading man (12 Years a Slave, August: Osage County and The Fifth Estate), like him or not, you cannot deny this is Benedict Cumberbatch’s year. Full Story

The Fifth Estate opens TIFF a week tomorrow. Am kind of curious to see how many of Benedict Cumberbatch’s fans show up at Roy Thomson Hall that night. And what level of Twi-Hard they reach. Like will they be breaking into all the hotels in the vicinity? Will they offer up their babies to him to hold? (This happened with Brad Pitt a few years ago. Full Story

Cumberbatch plays it like DiCaprio

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are shooting Sherlock in Cardiff, Wales. Sherlock evidently had his clothes stolen and is trying to escape in someone else’s. Leonardo DiCaprio? It’s like he’s acting out a scene from Leo’s true life, wearing second hand athletic gear and looking for a dumpster to jump into. Full Story

Sherlock’s return

Sarah Posted by Sarah

It’s about three months until Sherlock returns on the BBC and/or we all pirate it—no use pretending any of us are actually going to wait till it airs on PBS in twenty-motherf*cking-fourteen—and we have our first teaser. It’s a totally uninformative glimpse of Sherlock playing peek-a-boo with all the main characters and I love it. Full Story

Sherlockiana

July 22, 2013 16:36:11 Posted at July 22, 2013 16:36:11

That’s an actual word—it’s the name given to the cottage industry that sprung up around Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes stories, of films and television shows and even other stories written by different people. Anything Sherlock Holmes-adjacent is part of Sherlockiana, which means Comic-Con now has a footnote in the Sherlock Holmes encyclopedia, as Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, co-creators and writers of the BBC’s Sherlock, as well as producer Sue Vertue, appeared at Comic-Con on Friday to discuss series three. Full Story

Benedict Cumberbatch is a Matt Damon fanboy

Who isn’t? Everyone loves Matt Damon. Speaking to Vulture about his Emmy nomination (for the HBO/BBC miniseries Parade’s End), Benedict Cumberbatch confessed he’s got a big ole man-crush on fellow nominee Matt Damon. He calls him “Matt”, imagines having a dinner party with him, and teases the journalist about passing along a message about what a big fan he is, which is pretty much what we all do with celebrities we really like, right? Fanboying all over Matt Damon is the most accessible Cumberbatch has been in ages. Full Story
