How f-cking cute is Steve McQueen? The jumping up and down? It was indeed a director/film split between Gravity and 12 Years A Slave with Alfonso Cuaron taking Best Director and the right film being immortalised. Because, as I suggested in one of our production meetings this week, do you get the sense that Gravity is the Avatar of 2013? How will we talk about Gravity in 50 years? Can you say that we’ll talk about it in the same way we talk about 12 Years A Slave?
McQueen never seemed like he wanted to win the director prize anyway. Best Film was always the goal. And the Academy actually made the right call. The Academy did not Brokeback the Best Film. That was probably the closest race. Everything else went as expected.

12 Years A Slave – it’s the film everyone is calling the frontrunner for Best Picture. And the film that seems to be scaring off a few contenders. 12 Years screened at the New York Film Festival last night. Director Steve McQueen was there (and Madonna had to get in a photo with him) with star Chiwetel Ejiofor who has to be one of the five Best Actor nominees at this point, I mean he has to. Full Story

Michael Fassbender and Steve McQueen presented Shame at the London Film Festival today. Shame, as you know, is their second collaboration and word is they will work together for a third time on 12 Years A Slave, the true story of Solomon Northrup with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the lead role.
