It’s an easy prediction. Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut opens on Friday and, without significant competition, riding the wave of positive buzz, calling on the “Girl Power” collective, Whip It should win at the box office this weekend.
I’ve not seen it yet. I did however note the remarks of my colleagues back at TIFF that while Whip It is nothing in the way of groundbreaking, it is certainly “destined to be a crowd pleaser”. A Friday night treat, can’t wait.
Here’s the cast, led by Drew, on the carpet at the premiere last night. As you can see, Drew has cut off the inch of black, a shorter look. I like the length, I hate everything else. The slick style, the dress, the vamp…
It ages her. At first glance I thought it was Sharon Stone. See?
Drew was supported last night by Steven Spielberg – a refreshingly feel-good Hollywood ending. Steven of course directed Drew in E.T. And Steven showed up for Drew now that she’s a director too. Drew screened Whip It for Spielberg and described the experience:
"It was terrifying for me. But he gave me great notes. In the end, I followed every single one of them. But it was a long process of getting there. You just don't want to do what somebody says - even if it's Steven Spielberg."
Oh yeah, and Ellen Page owns my heart. Love her SO MUCH.
