Dustin Lance Black – The Advocate cover
If you’ve seen Milk, you know his work. If you watched the Oscars, you heard his speech. Dustin Lance Black, 35 years old, won the award Best Original Screenplay and stood up and delivered the following message:
“If Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he’d want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than, by their churches, by the government, or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you.”
The award ceremony is over but Black’s mission is not. He addresses his fight, The Fight, and discusses his post-Oscar experience, how his father’s Mormon family reacted with shame, how the writing community has embraced and supported him, and what he’s working on next.
It’s a great read. And The Advocate’s annual Pride issue featuring the list of “40 under 40” hits newsstands on May 19th.
