The last time I outright enjoyed a Ridley Scott movie, no reservations, no qualifications or conditions, was American Gangster in 2007. Since then he’s given us Grimdark Robin Hood, the space-magic bullsh*t of Prometheus, and the super messy but ambitious The Counselor, plus some other stuff no one cares about (AHEM EXODUS). Full Story

The Martian premieres tonight at TIFF. Sarah saw it today but she’s got four films on her schedule so her review for it will be posted on Monday. Her review for Jake Gyllenhaal’s Demolition is coming up soon. Ahead of the gala, Matt Damon and the cast of The Martian were at the Lightbox for the press conference this afternoon. Full Story

The writing was on the wall, but even amid downgraded expectations, Fantastic Four managed a spectacular belly-flop over the weekend. Dismal reviews and bad word of mouth—the movie got a C- from CinemaScore—led to a dismal $26.1 million opening weekend Full Story

More like Un-Fantastic Four

Well, Fantastic Four really sh*t the bed this weekend. All the problems plaguing the movie behind the scenes and dogging its disastrous release will be dealt with in a separate post, so that here we can simply focus on the final product, which is just the worst. It’s wrong-headed from the get, a giant f*ck you to both the idea of narrative consistency and the audience for having the temerity to expect a superhero movie—a genre about people with fantastical powers flying around and saving the world—to be any fun at all. Full Story

Fantastic Four may not be a total loss

And solely because of Michael B. Jordan. The final trailer for the gritty reboot of Fantastic Four is out and it looks like all your least favorite parts of comic book movies—destruction on a massive scale, blue beams of light pointing at the sky, overly serious dialogue, overreliance on CGI, the Very Special Boy trope—mashed into one movie. Full Story

Relief—a movie trailer that doesn’t make me want to crawl under my bed and hide! After a series of trailers that I had to watch with one hand over my eyes because the events depicted are pants-sh*tting scary, the trailer for the upcoming thriller Captive is a relative walk in the park. Full Story

The Martian: Also NOPE

June 8, 2015 16:49:02 Posted at June 8, 2015 16:49:02

I called Everest a big bag of NOPE after watching the first trailer, and after sitting through Fox’s three minute-plus first trailer for The Martian, I am adding this movie to the NOPE bag, too. Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian is based on Andy Weir’s novel (adapted by Drew Goddard) about an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars after a manned mission is forced to abort. Full Story

Fantastic Four is all about Michael B. Jordan

Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot is flying under the radar, as far as superhero movies go. This one has the least amount of hype and pre-release attention focused on it, and I can’t help but think that’s a good thing: With expectations low, even a mediocre result will feel like a win. Full Story

In the battle of the Rooney Sisters, where do we stand? For a while there, it seemed like Rooney Mara was ahead of elder sister Kate, and she did bag that Oscar nomination for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But recently she said that the English-language remake of the sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, is dead in the water Full Story

Lights, Camera, Pretention!

Sometimes when I’m in mixed company and people ask what I do, I get some flack for being an entertainment writer. Usually it’s from men, and it’s always a bit of a condescending take: entertainment news is shallow, it’s silly to like gossip, tabloids are for dumb people, it’s dangerous to worship at the feet of celebrities etc. Full Story

One of the things about all the people we write about is that they mostly exist in a bubble. Like, Oprah knows them all, but largely speaking you don’t have a lot of Viola Davis and Keira Knightley making a buddy comedy together. They don’t run into each other professionally, and just because they’re in the same movies doesn’t really mean they’re in the same room. Full Story
