Dear Gossips,

What do you want to talk about today?

Want to talk about how I wish I had a dire wolf and would give up all gifts for the rest of my life in exchange for one? Probably not.

Or how about Selena Gomez and...Orlando Bloom? Not that either.

Chris Martin speaking obliquely about consciously uncoupling from Gwyneth Paltrow? Maybe. But later.

George Clooney is engaged. This is the only headline in gossip, right? Ok. We'll get to that in first post, with some exclusive details.

But before that, California, I’m on my knees for you! The squawk and gossip session at Book Soup in LA on Friday night, in the gossip capital, was balls-out amazing. And then you sold out Book Passage in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, the best way to end the first leg of the US book tour! Thank you, love you, owe you.  Read Full Intro

I am an only child. My parents divorced when I was six years old. I wasn’t an outgoing person. I didn’t have a lot in common with the other kids at school, often being the only Chinese student in a classroom full of people whose parents also grew up in Canada or in other parts of the world where English is the first language. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

I’m reading a book right now called Remember The Time: Protecting Michael Jackson In His Final Days by Bill Whitfield, Javon Beard, and Tanner Colby. Whitfield and Beard were MJ’s bodyguards at the end. They were with him always. And the children too. And they saw everything.

This is not about the controversy. It’s not the salacious details about MJ’s life that make the story compelling. What’s compelling is the culture. The culture of protecting and indulging. The powerless observation. How contradictory, right? They are hired to look after him. To use brawn and aggression to take care of him against threats from the outside, when the greatest threat was happening inside. Celebrities are so afraid of what’s going on around them. They seem to never understand that what hurts them most is what’s killing them from within.  Read Full Intro

Rob Lowe is promoting a new book called Love Life. I can imagine. What are the stories that aren’t fit to print? Anyway, while promoting the book a few days ago, Rob talked about how his looks may have gotten in the way of his career. Like Mrs Timberlake and others before him, his beauty was, apparently, a burden. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Laini Taylor’s Dreams Of Gods & Monsters was released today. I downloaded it to my iPad as soon as my alarm went off this morning and now it’s just sitting there, next to me on the desk, taunting, tempting: Blow off the whole day and read me, read me, read me.

This book is a seductive bitch.

Did you read the first two? We begin with Daughter Of Smoke & Bone, a solid start to building Taylor’s warring world between beasts and angels. Once she sets up her universe, she takes it to another gear in the second book, Days Of Blood & Starlight. Unlike Divergent which started strong but couldn’t keep up in the second and third books, Taylor seems to be generating momentum as she goes along. I’m excited to find out how she handles this conclusion.  Read Full Intro

Dear Holly Bario, you smart executive who wisely gave the greenlight to Eleanor & Park… Sometimes I get mad at the concept of word of mouth.  It seems like such an egalitarian but inefficient system.  Like, why do I have to wait that long to find things out that might be awesome, that might have been improving my life all this time? This is how I feel about Rainbow Rowell’s books, and Eleanor & Park in particular. Full Story

Every day, I shoot a live talk show called The Social. But in two weeks, I’m giving birth to my book baby, Listen To The Squawking Chicken. My book baby has dual citizenship. Or you could say I’m having twins. My Canadian book baby will be born April 1 and my American book baby will come out on April 22. Full Story

The whole world loved that book. And, as I did last year when I first wrote about it after Shailene Woodley was cast as Hazel, I’m sorry, please forgive me. Because I wasn’t as obsessed with it as you were. Is that OK? I hope that’s OK. Full Story

I wrote about New Adult last week. Click here for a refresher. After that I read another called Deeper by Robin York. The formula is intact –  as you can see by the squicky title – but there’s a lot less eyeroll happening in this story. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

It’s Grammy weekend. It’s also the last weekend before Chinese New Year. Let’s start there. We clean before Chinese New Year. We get rid of the sh-t from the previous year to clear a path for the good luck of next year. According to my ma, the Squawking Chicken, and you should always Listen To The Squawking Chicken (which happens to be the name of my upcoming book, due out April 1 in Canada and April 22 in the US, click here to pre-order and, did I just do that? Did I just pimp my book and drop it into conversation for no reason like I’m talking about my pregnancy? Yes, yes I did), this weekend is a “lucky” weekend to clean. You should still clean on New Year’s Eve, which is Thursday, January 30, but doing it specifically this weekend might get you some bonus points too.  Read Full Intro

Dear Gossips,

Thanks for all your messages and recommendations re: the New Adult post from yesterday. Duana has one too:

Penelope by Rebecca Harrington.

This being Duana, please note it takes place at Harvard, of course, and it’s a satire which doesn’t exactly fit in with the over-earnestness of the genre. Because, as I mentioned yesterday, eye-rolling is a big part of reading New Adult. That’s why I try to avoid any New Adult that involves the male character being a “musician” or “rock star”. Because…REALLY!?!? Come on. Also, I refuse to read the supernatural ones. And I refuse to read the ones about a romance developing between a teacher and his student.  Read Full Intro

But first… Have you read Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park and Fangirl yet? Please do. I’m going to nag you about this until you do. And if we were in person together, I would withhold this list until you proved to me that you did. Thanks for your patience re: my New Adult book binge. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

I have just entered the third and final trimester of my book pregnancy. And I had promised that I would treat it like a baby pregnancy – be super self-indulgent and talk about it all the time, every page edit was supposed to be a baby kick – so I’m throwing myself a gender reveal party.

Actually, a book cover reveal party. I get to have two because the Canadian cover and the US cover are different. Here’s the Canadian cover of my book, Listen To The Squawking Chicken to be released in Canada on April 1 and in the US on April 22. Unlike real mothers, I won’t be mad if you tell me my baby is ugly. I will also totally expect you to talk about my baby behind my back and judge me for how much book weight I’ve put on. So far around 10 lbs.

Dear Gossips,

Someone yelled at me yesterday for disrespecting the People’s Choice Awards. Here’s why it’s hard to take the People’s Choice Awards seriously: Adam Sandler won for Favourite Comedic Movie Actor. I mean…

Sandler and Drew Barrymore have a new movie coming out, their 3rd together. Blended will be released in May, Memorial Day weekend. Which means they think it’ll draw the “family” crowd and hope it’s a big box office performer. Watch the trailer below. Now you know why I think that’s terrifying.

PCA coverage is coming. But there’s a lot of other (more interesting) business we have to get to too. Also many of you have been asking about my YA and romance binge-reading during the holidays. Will put a list together this weekend, if I can tear myself away from them.  Read Full Intro
