It’s not like I expected greatness from Ted 2, but I did have some expectation that it would be amusing, at least. Ted was surprisingly funny, and though it had plenty of signature Seth MacFarlane poop humor, it also had a nice little story about friendship at its center, and more jokes landed than didn’t. Full Story

Filmmaker David Gordon Green has a weirdly binary career. On one side are comedies like Pineapple Express, The Sitter, and Eastbound & Down, and on the other are slow, thoughtful dramas, usually set in the rural South, that show a heavy Terrence Malick influence. Green’s latest, Manglehorn, is of the Malickian variety, a slow, thoughtful drama about an odd and lonely man in Texas. Full Story

In addition to providing details on JK Rowling’s The Cursed Child, the Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye reports that they’re pushing really hard to get production started by the end of the summer on a third Bridget Jones movie: Bridget Jones’s Baby. Apparently negotiations are underway with Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth and they’re polishing the script which was written a few years ago by Helen Fielding and David Nicholls and is based on Fielding’s columns and not on the book that came out last year. Full Story

SCOTUS has just ruled in favour of same sex marriage. The Hollywood Reporter posted a story yesterday about Hollywood’s “stromos”, identifying a Hollywood trend among straight actors appealing to the gay audience: Today's stromos are the flip side of gay actors who want to read straight for their careers: They are straight actors striving to read gayish to optimize their appeal — and maximize the number of butts, gym-molded or otherwise, in movie theater seats. Full Story

Channing Tatum grinds on

The cast of Magic Mike XXL was in Miami yesterday promoting the movie. They surprised the audience at one of the screenings too, showing up for some bump and grind. As you can see, Channing Tatum, the big star, the main event, got his ass in on some action too. When I was looking at these shots and reading about the event, I thought about Marky Mark. Full Story

Go see Dope

A breakout hit at both Sundance and Cannes this year, writer/director Rick Famuyiwa’s Dope is equal parts Risky Business, The Breakfast Club, and Boyz n the Hood. It feels like a John Hughes movie, in that it’s very much about teenagers and their lives but isn’t for kids, and instead of suburban Illinois Dope is set in Inglewood, California, in a tough neighborhood called “the Bottoms”. Full Story

Michael Fassbender was photographed in London yesterday hanging out with friends. Fassbender’s been busy, working on the Steve Jobs movie earlier this year, then in Cannes to promote Macbeth, and production is now underway on X-Men: Apocalypse. And they’re saying much of the story will be about his character’s relationship with Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique. Full Story

Chris Pine to replace Ryan Reynolds?

In a bold marketing move known as “straight up lying”, it’s probable that the news that Chris Pine will be playing Wonder Woman’s boytoy is a straight up lie, and that Pine is, in fact, going to play a superhero himself—the Green Lantern. Full Story

Tanned Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm looked GREAT arriving at Kimmel yesterday, non? Relaxed and healthy, with really good hair (the best his hair has ever been, I think), and reasonably well contained. On camera he seemed very tanned. I’m not sure if it’s just the settings on my laptop but on my screen at least, that’s some good colour, or foundation. Full Story

Channing Tatum makes it impossible to not like him

How does he do this?! It is just impossible to not like Channing Tatum. My heart is made of second-hand smoke and the last inch of bourbon in the bottle and even I can’t hold out—Tatum has totally won me over. He may be a walking slab of abs and Mr. Potato Head’s face, but goddamn if he isn’t the most likeable dude in Hollywood these days. Full Story

But she’s not promoting Ted 2. I say this because someone just came into my office, saw the photos of her up on the screen, and remarked casually that, “Oh, is she promoting Ted 2?” Because Ted 2, as you’ve likely seen, is currently being promoted and it’s opening this coming Friday. Full Story

The thinking man’s Blake Lively has just been announced as a lead in the new Bourne movie, which should be titled The Bourne Continuum if there is any sense to the naming mechanism of this franchise. There are no details as to her role but she’s either playing an assassin or a helpless bystander, as those are the only two roles for women in these movies unless your name is Joan Allen. Full Story

After an exhaustive casting process—their most laborious since they had such a hard time getting someone to voice Rocket Raccoon—Marvel announced they have found their new Spider-Man and he is the English child, Tom Holland. It’s a good choice—Holland was very memorable in The Impossible, and he’s been a favorite in the casting process for a while. Full Story
