Dear Gossips,

This fall I read Sheila Weller’s new book The News Sorority about Christiane Amanpour, Diane Sawyer, and Katie Couric. SO good. Empowering and dishy at the same time – like good gossip? A debate for another day. The News Sorority is Weller’s follow-up to Girls Like Us, a triple bio of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon. I was OBSESSED with it. Click here for my review.

Girls Like Us was supposed to be turned into a movie. Two years ago, it was reported that Taylor Swift was in talks to play Joni Mitchell. Click here  Read Full Intro

Last night was all about Sam Smith’s coat. That coat! It took me back. Back to 80s London pop. Before Rick Astley was properly appreciated. Before he became an internet meme. I haven’t been Rick-rolled in so long I almost miss it. Sam Smith was like the baby Rick and Boy George always wanted to have together. Full Story

At this point I think she should just change the name of the song to Lonely Starbucks Lovers. Yes, I can read the lyrics. But all I HEAR is “Lonely Starbucks Lovers”. And reading your emails and tweets, it seems you are the same. I love that they had to give her a Lifetime Achievement Award just to get her there. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

It’s been a few days since we’ve seen Taylor Swift modelling clothes while coming out of her NYC apartment. What’s she been up to then?

American Music Awards Sunday night. She’ll be performing Blank Space for the first time on stage. Or, as I’ve started calling it, “Lonely Starbucks Lovers”.

Taylor is by far the main event for the AMAs this weekend. They’ve dedicated an entire page to her on their website. This is understandable. After all, she just became the first woman in history to succeed herself on the Billboard Hot 100 as Blank Space took over from Shake It Off.  Read Full Intro

Katy Perry is still an idiot

Katy Perry donated $10,000 to a school in Australia for her This Is How We Do school competition in Australia. I like the song, in spite of myself. But…have you ever listened to the lyrics? I’m not sure if this is the song you want representing youth engagement. Roar would have been better, hmmm? She’s still a Roar fraud but at least on surface sentiment, it’s definitely more appropriate. Full Story

You know the bad blood between Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, right? Taylor even wrote a song about it. Girl Sh-t Is The Best Sh-t, but some Girl Sh-t is embarrassing…because, God, this is over John Mayer. What a waste. Katy is now dating Diplo. And yesterday, Diplo, seemingly out of nowhere, tweeted this:   Get Taylor Swift A Booty https://t.co/RpkB8JExSV Full Story

I’m telling you, I keep telling you, Taylor Swift’s 1989 is GOOOOOOOD. And it gets better on repeat. That’s all I had on repeat last week on holiday. Like I wrote a couple of weeks ago, Taylor’s still pissed and bitter. But it’s a lot less precious now. A lot less sulky. Full Story

The CMA Awards happened last night in Nashville. Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley hosted again. And they are GREAT at it, as comfortable as Amy Poehler and Tina Fey at the Golden Globes, and just as willing to go there. I mean, they were already taking shots at Taylor Swift even before she left country – and you know, YOU KNOW Carrie can’t pass up an opportunity to take shots at Taylor Swift. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Well, she did it. Taylor Swift’s 1989 sold 1.287 million copies in its first week, the most by any artist since 2002. And it’s her THIRD million plus album in a row – she’s the only artist to EVER do that, especially remarkable since they keep saying that album sales are going down.

It’s one thing to say that the marketing helped. They could afford to send her everywhere – she arrived in Japan yesterday to promote the album overseas – and she’s so active on social media, the Swift brand is practically unstoppable. That’s true, to a point. And if the album sucked, it would the only truth, the only factor.

But 1989 does not suck. 1989 is pure pop, top to bottom – catchy, sing-along-able, and really, really fun. I can’t stop listening to it.  Read Full Intro

There’s a rumour going around about a new “surprise” album which… wouldn’t be a surprise anymore if it’s true. Billboard is pointing to a “Release Confirmation” that seems to suggest that Beyonce: Volume 2 is on the way on November 14 (online release) featuring collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Justin Timberlake. Full Story

Gwyneth Paltrow has had a great week. Taylor Swift has had an amazing week. She’s been out there hard, pushing 1989. And I’m curious to find out what the first week sales figures are going to be. Because RED was a big number. This one will be a big number too. For sure the biggest number of the year. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

So I think I might disappoint you again with the following: I LOVE the new Taylor Swift album, 1989. It’s a dance in your kitchen kind of album. It’s a play in the background while you’re getting ready with your team kind of album. It’s a play in your car on the way to the airport to drop off your best friend after the most amazing weekend kind of album.

And it’s not that Taylor isn’t pissed anymore. At the boys, at the broken hearts they leave behind. It’s just that she seems a lot less… petulant? Less petulant in her anger? I never thought I’d want to have a conversation with Taylor Swift before, like a real conversation. And now, after listening to this album, after hearing her music, I’m starting to believe Taylor Swift might have something to say.

Or, again, maybe it’s just that I grew up in the 80s. I can’t resist this sound.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey

Taylor Swift performed Out Of The Woods on Kimmel last night. They shut down the block for her. I told you last week that I love the song – click here for a refresher – and that I can’t stop listening to it. Seeing her performing it is an entirely different experience. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

I can’t stop listening to Taylor Swift’s new song Out Of The Woods. And it’s not even a hate-listen. It’s a want-listen. And I love the lyrics. For me, it’s this line:

“Like we stood a chance”

Maybe it’s because I’m so 80s.

Maybe because almost everyone I’ve ever dated was heinous. And I should have asked myself more often whether or not we were out of the woods. No, no, I should never have gotten INTO the woods.

Anyway, I’m sorry. It feels like I’ve done something wrong, paying $1.29 for the song. I feel like I’ve disappointed you. But still, I can’t stop listening. Is that meta in some way?
