In a bold marketing move known as “straight up lying”, it’s probable that the news that Chris Pine will be playing Wonder Woman’s boytoy is a straight up lie, and that Pine is, in fact, going to play a superhero himself—the Green Lantern. Full Story

Jon Hamm looked GREAT arriving at Kimmel yesterday, non? Relaxed and healthy, with really good hair (the best his hair has ever been, I think), and reasonably well contained. On camera he seemed very tanned. I’m not sure if it’s just the settings on my laptop but on my screen at least, that’s some good colour, or foundation. Full Story

Channing Tatum makes it impossible to not like him

How does he do this?! It is just impossible to not like Channing Tatum. My heart is made of second-hand smoke and the last inch of bourbon in the bottle and even I can’t hold out—Tatum has totally won me over. He may be a walking slab of abs and Mr. Potato Head’s face, but goddamn if he isn’t the most likeable dude in Hollywood these days. Full Story

But she’s not promoting Ted 2. I say this because someone just came into my office, saw the photos of her up on the screen, and remarked casually that, “Oh, is she promoting Ted 2?” Because Ted 2, as you’ve likely seen, is currently being promoted and it’s opening this coming Friday. Full Story

The thinking man’s Blake Lively has just been announced as a lead in the new Bourne movie, which should be titled The Bourne Continuum if there is any sense to the naming mechanism of this franchise. There are no details as to her role but she’s either playing an assassin or a helpless bystander, as those are the only two roles for women in these movies unless your name is Joan Allen. Full Story

After an exhaustive casting process—their most laborious since they had such a hard time getting someone to voice Rocket Raccoon—Marvel announced they have found their new Spider-Man and he is the English child, Tom Holland. It’s a good choice—Holland was very memorable in The Impossible, and he’s been a favorite in the casting process for a while. Full Story

Channing Tatum today promoting Magic Mike XXL. Which is an improvement on Magic Mike. In that, well, my complaint about Magic Mike was like, really?, you’re going to do character development on this? In an interview this weekend with the Plymouth Herald, Channing talked about putting together Magic XXL and the approach to making the film: "We read the message boards and they were like, 'Less story, more dancing', so we take direction well. Full Story

At one point in Inside Out, Pixar’s latest after a two year hiatus, the anthropomorphized emotions inside a little girl’s head spill boxes of fact and opinions and, unable to tell them apart, jumble them up while putting them back. “Don’t worry,” says the little girl’s imaginary friend, “it happens all the time. Full Story

Say what you want about Marvel movies, but directing them is a landmark career moment for filmmakers. Marvel can’t guarantee A List status for its stars, but it can transform a director’s career. So it is very, VERY exciting that Ava DuVernay has signed on to direct Black Panther, due in 2018. Full Story

Mia Wasikowska as Madame Bovary

Emma Bovary is never anything less than frustrating, so it’s fitting that the latest screen adaptation of Flaubert’s novel, Madame Bovary, should also be frustrating. Directed by Sophie Barthes and co-written by Barthes and Felipe Marino, Madame Bovary is a gorgeous film that is sometimes inspired and sometimes mundane, but is consistently frustrating. Full Story

Spoilers, but also like, the title Like Whiplash before it, one film won both the Audience Award and the US Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Whiplash went on to bag five Oscar nominations, winning three of them. I don’t know if Dying Girl will have the legs to carry it all the way to Oscar—it’s not as ferocious a movie as Whiplash, and it lacks a fiery, attention-getting performance—but it is certainly a very good movie, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see it pull an Adapted Screenplay nomination, if nothing else, telling the story of awkward high school student Greg’s senior year, in which he befriends a terminally ill classmate, struggles with his future, and falls out with his best friend. Full Story

Coming out of Cannes, Denis Villeneuve’s latest film, Sicario, received very positive reviews, with many singling out Emily Blunt’s performance as a possible awards contender. Since breaking out with the Oscar-nominated Incendies in 2010, Villeneuve has established himself as a consistently compelling director of thrillers, and many think Sicario could be his first major mainstream hit (Prisoners was a modest success in 2013). Full Story

Allison Janney and Ellen Page are back together, seen here yesterday on the set of Tallulah in New York. Coincidentally, it’s another movie about a baby. The baby’s mother is evidently a f-ck up. So Ellen rescues her and pretends she’s the mother instead, helped by her boyfriend’s mother, presumably played by Allison. Full Story
