The love is over, the show goes on

The CW upfronts happened in New York today. And the stars of one of the network’s most important shows, The Vampire Diaries, turned up together, but not. It was confirmed last week that Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder have ended their relationship. Needless to say, there were no group shots. Full Story
Welcome Back
The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 22 recap Well, that was only a little bit creepy. I know we had twenty minutes of explanation about the veil and where it dropped and why, but aside from those nods to propriety, it all felt a little easy, didn’t it? Veil dropped. Loved ones returned. Full Story
Nina & Ian: it’s over

I suppose the signs were there -- Nina Dobrev and Julianne Hough seem to be inseparable lately, single girls enjoying their freedom, just in time for summer. Now US Weekly has confirmed exclusively that Nina, like Julianne before her, is indeed officially single -- after three years, it’s over between her and Ian Somerhalder. Full Story
MET personal style match: Nina Dobrev

As you know, my complaint about Nina Dobrev -- who I adore -- has always been that her aesthetic is a little too... Eastern Bloc figure skater. Think ... Katerina Witt. Right? Finally a theme and an event that suits her personal style. This is exactly right. A little tacky, but sassy -- which kinda defined the 80s, so why not a throwback to Demi Moore at the Oscars in 1989? On this night it works, although, ahem, it also says everything about what I think of Monique L’huillier. Full Story
Well. Thank God that’s over.

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 21 recap Elena has her humanity back, and it took Matt, who had never hurt anyone, being hurt himself, for her to realize this was all a bit much and to stop with the temper tantrums. Sorry, but that’s clearly what’s up here – Damon was the first to call her a brat, but she’s been cruising for it for a while. Full Story
Fun With No Extras

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 18 recap Please shut up, Caroline. Please. Now that we’ve covered that entire storyline, this was kind of a super-fun episode. One of the things I like best about when Katherine and Elena face off – whether Elena’s in humanity mode, human mode, or none of the above – is that it makes her up her game. Full Story
Underwhelmed If That’s A Word

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 16 recap Well, that was less than I expected. Am I wrong? After watching Elena’s pain overwhelm her, then her badass walk out of the house she decided to torch, I thought the turning off of her feelings would mean she was unfeeling, but not necessarily numb to the point of …boredom. The “Lost” Diaries

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 13 recap Not only was I not the only one who was thinking it, I have to believe it was where the whole idea came from, right? “Guys, how are we going to do this whole ‘nobody trusts anyone’ thing this week?” “Dump ‘em on a beach! Somerhalder on a beach! It’s flashbacks right there! I miss LOST!” It is indeed flashbacks, though Damon is way more interesting to watch than Boone, even when he’s doing nothing. Full Story
Bonnie Bungs It Up Again
The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 10 Remember how on the old, politically incorrect Scooby-Doo, no matter who actually screwed up, they would blame Daphne? I wasted serious time this morning trying to find the catchphrase they said but to no avail, so if you remember, you’ll make my weekend. Full Story
The teen drama is kind of gone…
Ben Rose/ Getty
The Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 8 recap I mean, of course it’s not; the CW exists because there are teen dramas abounding, and ABC Family is there to pick up where they leave off, but that year 2000 movement where anything with a teenager was automatically relevant and made what your show had to say not just a show about coming of age, but a greater treatise on The World and how Learning To Be In It was bittersweet. TIFF REVIEW: The Perks Of Being A Wallflower
Jerod Harris/Getty
I have to begin by confessing that I have not read The Perks of Being a Wallflower. And I can safely say that I regret letting it slip through the cracks. Because if a movie this good came from a book, I can only imagine how transformative that book must be. As a movie, The Perks of Being a Wallflower will go down as one of the great coming of age classics. Full Story
Life's too short
Fame/Flynet
The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 22 recapIsn't that right? No matter how long a time on earth, isn't the person always gone too soon? Isn't there always more you could have said or done? Greater wishes you had to be with them, say the last thing? Nobody ever says, at the end of a life, “well, that was about the exact right time. Full Story
Met Gala skating pass: Nina Dobrev
Larry Busacca/Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty
You know I love her a lot. She’s my girl. I cheer for her every chance I get. I tried to cheer for her Donna Karan dress at the Met Gala (yay Nina’s at the Met Gala!), I really did. But the thing about Nina is ...It’s always just so loud, sparkly, ruffly, sequiney, bright, sheer. In other words, figure skating seems to be her go-to. Full Story

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 19 recapPreviously on VD, Elena loved them both, but Stefan knew Elena had feelings for Damon. Oh and then there was that Klaus business. They had stakes to kill him, except for one belonging to murdery-possibilities Ric, which is MISSING. Elena brings Alaric some supplies in a Red Riding Hood sweater and gets all faux-huffy that Damon slipped “Dr. Full Story
