Sponsored Tingles: Red Carpet SCENEtourage - This Means War
We’re getting closer and closer to the Oscars; less than two weeks away. And while the Oscars are about celebrating last year’s top movies, new ones keep coming and we’re taking a look at a few hitting theaters this month that have links – some loose and some not so loose – to Oscar. We’re also making sure you’ve entered our Annual Red Carpet contest. Have you entered yet? Details are below.
This week it’s This Means War and no, there is NO way This Means War will get anywhere near the Oscars. But it does feature an Oscar-winning actress called Reese Witherspoon. Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly and Drew McWeeny of HitFix, two critics I admire, were both supportive in their reviews. According to Drew though, Reese has to step aside for her two co-stars:
“Reese is the one with all the options, and in a movie where she's the third prettiest person in the cast, it's obvious whose fantasies are being most clearly indulged here.”
This is an interesting question because This Means War and The Vow are ranked very similarity after reviews. And yet there is remarkably MORE goodwill for The Vow than there is for This Means War; the story of a woman loved in the most profound way possible appeals more to the lady demographic than the story of a woman who is loved by not one but TWO men to the point of battle...
Some say it’s because it’s not believable, that they have a hard time believing Reese Witherspoon could inspire such intense competition. But as Drew noted above, “whose fantasies are being most clearly indulged here”? You know what her fanbase is. You know the point is for them to imagine themselves in that way, so desirable as to be the catalyst for a bloody but sexy throwdown between two hot dudes.
I find it fascinating what gets rejected and what doesn’t these days.
Anyway, I’ve decided to see both this weekend because I worked all last weekend and need to not think for two days and also it’s an intriguing comparison, certainly something we’d do at the Faculty of Celebrity Studies at a liberal arts university somewhere in New England. Will offer my analysis on Monday.
