Hi Hayley, I work in a busy bar 4x/week. My hours are 5:30pm to between 12 and 3am.  I bring a large salad to work with protein and fat in it, that I snack on when I can.  I am wondering if, for my schedule is it ok to eat at night when I get home if I am hungry.  I track my calories throughout the day, and I usually am quite under all my caloric goals by the time work is finished. Full Article

Summertime. If you are anything like me, you are outside enjoying everything your city has to offer.  From dawn until dusk I am swimming, paddling, hiking, riding or running and it is not uncommon to find me enjoying the sunset with a much deserved cocktail in my hand. But, why is it that as active as I am I always enter the fall heavier than I left spring? Yes, a lot of it has to do with all of the muscle building activities that I am doing but I would be fooling myself if I thought that was the only reason why my pants are tight come Labour Day. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Learning to run on creaky knees

Hi Hayley, I've never been athletic in my life, but I'd like to start running.  I can walk all day and I try to get in at least half an hour each day, but I'd like to step up my game. I have mild arthritis in my knees which has shown improvement since I started walking daily and lost weight, but it's not severe, so I don't think that should deter me. Full Article

Hi Hayley, 11 months after I had my baby I realized I had diastasis recti- not too bad- 2.5-2 finger widths.  Unfortunately I have been doing crunches, planks and everything you should not be doing for almost a year.  When I try to research this online I get very stressed because I can't find solid facts on this, and some sites suggest that because I've been crunching so long, my abs have now healed open like this. Full Article

Hi Hayley! First, I'm starting your walk to run program and I'm super psyched about it. I'm in desperate need of some physical exercise in my life besides my every day walk to work routine. The problem is that my body is not proportional at all. I'm an apple shape or as my boyfriend lovingly puts it "built like a sparrow. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I am a 29 year old female who needs to tone her bottom half.... I am 5'3" and weigh about 117 lbs. my backstory.... Growing up, I was always very petite. When I say petite, I mean so skinny I looked slightly ill. I just could not gain weight. My legs looked like pins sticking out of a skirt or dress and I had no boobs (and still don't). Full Article

Summer has finally arrived and, like the rest of the country, it is time to get outside, into the sunshine. To me summer is about being outdoors and enjoying all the activities my city has to offer, from mountain biking, to mountain hiking, to trail running, to swimming, to SUP yoga, to beach volleyball, to cruiser bike rides on the seawall to kayaking and to boating, you rarely find me sitting idle, poolside. Full Article

Hi Hayley! I am starting an 8-week clean eating diet. No fruit; lean protein and green veggies only. The thing is, I am a fairly small person (5'0, 115lbs) and I'm afraid eating 1200 calories a day isn't few enough to whip me into shape. On days when I don't work out, can I go less than 1200cals without going into "starvation mode"? I'd love to hear your opinion on this. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I'm a second time mom (my youngest is 4 months) and I'm struggling with what is realistic right now combined with whether I'm approaching my postpartum weight loss the right way. I'm normally about a size 6-8, so not tiny but I've never had a weight problem and I eat mostly clean and I'm always active. Full Article

Hayley, I need your help STAT. I just had my first fitness shame moment. Up until now, while not in the best of shape, my body has always risen to any challenge I gave it. Today I started an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime hike with a group of fellow travelers only to have the guide turn halfway up, call back to me and say I needed to turn around, go home, and have a drink at the pub because I wasn't going to make it and I was holding the group back. Full Article

Obstacle races are becoming the big thing right now and I have to say that I am a fan of that! They are events that anyone can participate in and you can make them as serious as you like. I love the buzz around the city when Tough Mudder rolls into Whistler and I get so excited to see so many people challenging themselves and having a good time. Full Article

Hi Hayley, I recently ran the BMO half-marathon here in Vancouver and now I'm gearing up for the Lululemon Seawheeze in August. What's the best way to train between now and then? Do I scale back my long runs and ramp them up slowly like I would if I were starting from scratch, or keep running long distances and work on upping my pace? For reference, I've run two half-marathons ever: one last year with a time of 1:51 and the one this past weekend with a time of 1:42. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Sporty Sunscreen

Hi Hayley, I have a quick question for a sunscreen recommendation. I am a long-time runner who recently moved to Florida from Montreal. In Canada, I had typically exercised in the early evening, but lately this hasn't been possible and I've been running around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, sometimes earlier. Full Article

Smutty Fitness: Half Corked Marathon

I love wine and I love to run so when one of my close friends suggested we do the Half Corked Marathon that runs through Oliver Osooyos Wine Country I said yes without hesitation. I knew I had made the right decision when I saw the route for the race as it read more like a wine menu at my favourite restaurant than a race map. Full Article
