Yesterday the list of the 2016 class of invitees to join the Academy was released, and it shows follow-through on their promise, after back-to-back years of #OscarsSoWhite controversy, to double membership diversity by 2020. This year they invited an unprecedented 683 members—about ten percent of the pre-existing membership. Full Story
Tomorrow is Canada Day, kicking off the long weekend in Canada. Which is why I saved my favourite article of the week for today’s open. It’s Vulture’s interview with Dr Shoukath Ansari, who could receive an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his work in his son Aziz Ansari’s Master Of None.
One of the reasons Aziz’s show has resonated with so many people is because of the spotlight he put on the immigrant story. My parents are immigrants. They left Hong Kong with dreams. Dreams for themselves sure but, mostly, dreams for me. Whoever I would be. But that’s the point. The options for who and what I could be were so much more here in Canada. And that’s likely what Dr Ansari and his wife, Fatima, hoped for their children.
For an immigrant parent though, it’s not just the move and the transition from the home country to the new one. It’s also what you sacrifice in being able to relate to the children for whom you’ve made the sacrifices. My parents had no background with the cultural experiences that a child growing up in North America might encounter. Fortunately for us, what was frustrating in youth has become pure comedy in adulthood – exactly what Shoukath and Aziz Ansari are mining on the show. This entire interview is delightful but the part where I just completely lost it was when Shoukath tells Aziz, “You cannot read”. There’s your classic immigrant parent realness. Click here to enjoy it.
Happy Canada Day!
In celebration of Canada’s birthday, we will not be blogging tomorrow. Back to regular blog schedule on Monday. And to those of you in America, Happy Independence Day!
Have a great weekend!

Another summer in Vancouver, another year I probably won’t hike the Grouse Grind. If Neil Patrick Harris takes a gondola up, I actually feel less bad about being a lump of uselessness. Vancouver is awesome. Took the family up to Grouse Mountain, rode a gondola, saw a lumberjack show and took in the spectacular views. And rested in carved trees. #ohcanada Full Story

We’re done with Westeros for another year, and all that’s left is to pick over the bones of the season that was. Mostly this means trying to figure out what Jon Snow’s Targaryen name is—Lyanna Stark definitely said it to Young Ned, but it’s impossible to hear clearly—and taking odds on who will kill Cersei first: The Tyrell/Targaryen/Sand alliance, a popular revolt led by the people of King’s Landing, or, in a surprise twist, Jaime! He’s sworn her loyalty above all others, but all their children are dead and I don’t think even Jaime’s love blinkers are strong enough to overlook Cersei blowing up a significant chunk of the city. Matthew McConaughey’s Free State Of Jones opened last week with not great reviews and not a great box office. Some have taken issue with the film’s “faux-enlightenment”. Others argue that there is some insight in how the film “exposes (what Jesse William’s called) the invention of whiteness” at the BET Awards Full Story

Leslie Jones is one of the four new Ghostbusters. The new Ghostbusters movie is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer. We’ve been talking about it for over a year. Ghostbusters is a major motion picture release. So…why can’t Leslie Jones find anything to wear to the premiere? It's so funny how there are no designers wanting to help me with a premiere dress for movie. Full Story
