I was feeling pretty good about Game of Thrones going into finale week until Lainey put a bug in my ear about Littlefinger becoming the new big bad—now that Ramsay Bolton is gone—and I’ve spent all week trying to break down the odds of that happening. After saving Jon Snow’s ass during the Battle of the Bastards, the Starks are now indebted to Littlefinger, so he’s got some leverage against them. Full Story

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 9 recap SPOILERS Feed your dogs. If you take any life lessons from Game of Thrones, it’s this—FEED YOUR DAMN DOGS. We’ll get to Ramsay Bolton and his deliciously fitting end, but first: Meereen. With the city under attack, it played out as assumed—the dragons finally got off their asses and did something useful, and the sight of Daenerys riding Drogon as her children laid waste to the masters’ fleet was enough to end the fight. Full Story

SPOILERS Several plans don’t work out and people reveal themselves to be the people we always thought they were this week on Game of Thrones. Thematically this is a rich episodes that pays off years of character work, but dramatically, man, some of these storylines feel like such a f*cking waste of time—Riverrun is the biggest letdown since Dorne. Full Story

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 7 recap SPOILERS All season we’ve been seeing women rise to power across Westeros, and this week the power shift continues. Some have said that the shift is due to the showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, responding to years of criticism lobbed at them for the brutal and degrading treatment of women on Game of Thrones. Full Story

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 6 recap You can really feel the downhill run coming as the story advances by leaps this week. Let’s start with the part no one cares about, the Lannisters and Tyrells and High Sparrow. The Tyrell army shows up to liberate Margaery and Loras, but Margaery basically saved herself by getting Tommen to convert and align with the High Sparrow. Full Story

After an intense episode that opened up a huge new avenue of possibilities for Game of Thrones, we’ve got a lot to discuss, theory-wise. One of the great joys of this show is all the speculating as we try to guess what will happen next or how the various disjointed characters and pieces of narrative will fit together. Full Story

Game of Thrones 6.5: “Hold the door”

Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 5 recap SPOILERS One word, that has meant so many other words. A single word that was so often a joke, a punchline, the word that broke through the brutality and death and tragedy with brief moments of humor—a word no one took seriously. Until the moment when Hodor held the door, and “Hodor” becomes one of the most powerful words in Game of Thrones. Full Story

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 4 recap SPOILERS A note from last week. I mentioned that there are two Stark direwolves left, Summer and Ghost. I had a line about Nymeria, Arya’s wayward wolf, banished in season one because the Lannisters are petty f*cking assholes, but I cut it because since we haven’t seen hide nor hair of Nymeria in five years, she doesn’t count as a player on the board. Full Story

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 3 recap SPOILERS In the wake of Jon Snow’s resurrection, we’ve wondered what the “rules” are of his second life. Is he, like Beric Dondarrion, missing “pieces” of himself? Or is his resurrection somehow different? This week’s episode has a Stark-centric theme of the known and the unknown, and right now Jon Snow inhabits the space between the two. Full Story

Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 2 recap SPOILERS, THESE WILL ALWAYS BE SPOILERS So, it happened. The single most important thing on Game of Thrones happened. Tyrion let the dragons go. But they didn’t leave the pyramid! Get off your lazy asses, dragons! There are enemies to eat and things to burn down! The dragon sound design is PHENOMENAL—it would have been so easy to borrow pre-existing sound from, say, Jurassic Park dinosaurs, but the dragons sound unique, and they have never sounded better. Full Story
