In case you need a reminder, Independence Day 2 is actually happening and will be released in summer 2016. April/May is when the summer ’16 movies go into production, and to that end, Independence Day 2 is getting its ducks in a row, announcing some key casting. Relative unknown Jessie Usher will star as the grown-up version of Will Smith’s son from the first movie—Smith won’t be appearing in the sequel—and Liam, The Lesser Hemsworth will also star in a lead role. Full Story

I spent some time yesterday thinking about the Rihanna and Leonardo DiCaprio situation while hopped up on painkillers. I’m telling you, it was a mental workout. I got a lot done in my mind. Leo ended last week with a story about how he’s preparing to play Billy Milligan in The Crowded Room about the guy who had 24 personalities and used that defence in court. Full Story

The trend over the last several years has to been to depict Sherlock Holmes as a dashing young detective, thanks to the one-two punch of Robert Downey, Jr.’s Victorian-era rake and Bimblesnort Cupcake’s twenty-first century misanthrope. But director Bill Condon has a new iteration for us—an older one. Full Story

Following a Twitter stunt in which fans had to tweet the hashtag #AvengersAssemble in order to “unlock” a new trailer—I imagine people at Marvel, drunk on their own power, screeching, “Dance monkeys, dance!” and cackling maniacally—yesterday Marvel released the final trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, and it’s all our dreams come true. Full Story

Nicholas Hoult was photographed on the set of Top Gear yesterday in Sussex for the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment. There was a training session with the Stig. And then he did his laps. The final time, obviously, will air on the show. Like you, I tell myself that I would kick ass on this challenge. Full Story

Will Smith’s career over the last few years has been kind of a sh*t show. In between foisting his offspring on an unsuspecting public he’s starred in a series of bad movies (Men in Black III, After Earth, Winter’s Tale), and he lost some public goodwill along the way—as evidenced by his diminishing box office returns Full Story

Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper in Serena review

The question, when watching Serena, is “Where did this go wrong?” Shot in 2012, it re-teamed proven screen couple Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence for an adaptation of Ron Rash’s novel directed by Susanne Bier, an award-winning Danish filmmaker. There’s a lot of talent on both sides of the camera in Serena, so why did it sit on the shelves for three years before getting a hasty, barely-there release? Answer: “Because it’s a mess featuring bad performances. Full Story

I didn’t have particularly high hopes for Everly, because I’ve seen director Joe Lynch’s other feature film, Knights of Badassdom, and it’s a mess. I thought at best, Everly would be a B-movie Kill Bill knock-off, at worst it would be forgettable junk, like The Purge. But then Everly did the nearly impossible and surpassed even my worst expectations. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

One week after winning Oscar, Julianne Moore showed up at the Canadian Screen Awards last night in Toronto. She was nominated for her role in David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars. And lost to Anne Dorval for her performance in Xavier Dolan’s Mommy.

Still, Julianne – who was staffed by Stephen Huvane – worked the entire press line, stopping for almost every media outlet, because, as she told the Toronto Star

“I love Toronto. I’ve been coming to Toronto to work since 1986, a really long time, so I feel I’m practically Canadian.”

Love that. Love her.  Read Full Intro

These photos from last week were just released today. It’s Justin Timberlake visiting his wife on the set of The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea. The photographers are calling it a “surprise”. Look at that smile, how happy she is that he was there, that he came to see her. It’s like a reward! When’s the next time we’ll be seeing Mr Timberlake on a movie set? They announced Spinning Gold about Neil Bogart, what?, two years ago? And then there were reports that Spike Lee was in talks to direct. Full Story

I love Sarah Gadon. So I’m gushing here: If Hollywood were a stock exchange, you want to buy shares in Sarah Gadon… and fast. Much like Tatiana Maslany, Sarah won big at the Canadian Screen Awards too — but she didn’t take home a trophy. In fact, she wasn’t nominated this year, even though five of her Maps to the Stars co-stars were, including Robert Pattinson and Julianne Moore. Full Story

Ryan Gosling’s new tattoo

Could just be pen. Temporary writing. But given the direction the letters are facing, I’ll guess permanent until we hear otherwise. Because it would be easier for a tattoo artist to write the letters facing themselves than have to come behind you, or get you to twist your hand around, to write the letters facing you. Full Story

Brad Pitt was at LAX on Saturday. Some say he was heading to France to check in on their property and the wine. Brange has been quiet lately, on the Hollywood front at least. She’s likely in post for By The Sea and he has yet to confirm his next acting role, although it’s been revealed that he’ll be producing a Lewis and Clark series for HBO with Edward Norton and Tom Hanks. Full Story
