The Cannes Film Festival begins on Wednesday. Sarah from Cinesnark will have a preview of this year’s festival coming soon. In advance of The Great Gatsby’s big opening on Wednesday, many celebrities are starting to arrive. Julianne Moore is already there and was seen on her balcony at the Hotel Martinez today. Last time Julianne was in Cannes I *think* it was for Blindness? Or did A Single Man go to Cannes? I don’t remember it...

There are 3 or 4 major hotels on the Croisette in Cannes where the junkets happen. During the festival, huge crowds gather outside. At the Martinez, they set up a perimeter to back off the public so that the cars can come in and out. They make you flash your press credentials to access the lobby so as to cockblock the Twi-Hards. Because of the added security, celebrities are that much more comfortable hanging out in the main areas of the hotel which is commonly used for many of them to get ready before heading to the Palais. This is also where most jury members stay during festival. I imagine the festival gets a deal there. Nicole Kidman is a jury member this year, but I can’t imagine her anywhere else but a private residence or the Hotel Du Cap up the coast in Antibes. Which would be a pain in the ass to shuttle her by boat and etc every day to get to the screenings.

This is the first time in 8 years that I won’t be in Cannes. Jacek and I are moving to Toronto in 6 weeks for a job opportunity. Holy Sh-t. And we still don’t have a place to live. My electronic cigarette is being used heavily because of this stress. It’s just not the best time to go gallivanting in the south of France. Thanks God -- so far at least -- the Brange is not expected. The upside to not going is that there that I won’t be working on a crazy time difference with no sleep. And Dylan and Mio are still going which means I can live vicariously through them. They’ll be spying at the parties. Cannes coverage might actually be more extensive this year.
