JT honours Fallon but really himself
TIME has released its annual list of the 100 Most Influential People in the world. Jimmy Fallon was included and Justin Timberlake was asked to write a few words in celebration of his friend’s achievement. Before enjoying Justin’s piece though, take a minute to check out the other entries:
Celine Dion honoured Christina Aguilera -- click here.
Jon Hamm for Bryan Cranston -- click here.
Ed Helms supported his The Office co-star Mindy Kaling -- click here.
Jodie Foster paid tribute to Jennifer Lawrence’s eyes -- click here.
John Legend appreciates Frank Ocean -- click here.
These are just a few of the entries under the Artist category.
You’ll note, all of them focused on the artist being recognised and not on themselves. Any “I” statements are always in service of the subject. Example: I think X is so funny and talented. As opposed to: I was really funny and talented when I had the opportunity to work with X.
You see the difference?
That is the difference between everyone else... and Justin Timberlake who was supposed to be respecting Jimmy Fallon and instead made his piece about his wedding.
You remember that wedding, don’t you?
When he jumped on his wife’s head on the cover of PEOPLE Magazine?
When he serenaded his wife down the aisle and made “grown men weep” from the sweetness of his gesture and not, unfortunately, from the sight of her in her pink gown? That day was all about him. So why wouldn’t Fallon’s moment be all about Justin Timberlake?
Picture this: I’m in the heart of an impromptu speech at my wedding reception in front of 150 guests, pouring it out to my lovely new bride. You could hear a pin drop. I paused for just a moment in between thoughts. And then there was Jimmy, shouting a joke from his seat, sparking an improv between the two of us that went on for a good five or 10 minutes and had all our guests roaring with laughter. Interrupting the groom’s speech at the wedding reception? Cracking jokes when your buddy is looking desperately for the words to say that he hopes his wife will remember forever? It turned into a moment that everyone there will remember forever. Anyone else would have bombed on that stage. And then I would have kicked their ass.
Oh I see what you did there.
It’s the COMBINATION of JT and Fallon that made that sh-t so great, right?
Like everyone should be so lucky to have Pips and Jimmy improv-ing at their wedding. Mrs Timberlake coulda been a cardboard cut-out at that wedding and it wouldn’t have made a difference.
Click here to read JT’s article on Fallon for TIME. He opens with “Jimmy Fallon just can’t help himself”. Can Justin Timberlake help himself? I love the irony of his applauding Jimmy for his ability to “share the moment” while forcing himself into the moment.
