A friend sent me this Melissa McCarthy article this morning – the headline: “Melissa McCarthy Looks So Slim, Even Under Multiple Layers.” Groan, right? Obviously. But it’s actually an interesting headline simply because of the language used – usually the discussion around an actress’s weight is fluffed up a bit with words like “svelte”, “post baby body”, “healthy”, “toned”, “trim. So did you see this image yesterday? I am very, very tired, so don’t quote me, but I count 59 women in this picture, not counting the bewildered 4 year old who will someday go ‘oh my god, I was IN that picture’. 3 cheers to @theellenshow from all the remarkable women of #ghostbusters. When we stand together we are unstoppable! #girlpower Full Story
The last time we saw the new Ghostbusters they were dressed in civilian clothes. Thanks to more on location filming this week, we now have photos of the whole team in their new ghostbusting suits. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon are in the familiar jumpsuits, but sporting a modified look with a seventies era style orange stripe. Full Story
Kristen Wiig was photographed on the set of the new Ghostbusters movie, looking rather dowdy in her costume. I’m into this—one of the best parts of OG Ghostbusters is that the guys aren’t hero-types. They’re awkward nerds who get excited about science, and Wiig’s costume is giving me hope that’s the holdover spirit uniting the two movies. Full Story

I was nervous about this one going in because though I think Melissa McCarthy is very talented, she has also made a lot of bad movies since breaking out in Bridesmaids. But Spy reunites her with her Bridesmaids and The Heat director, Paul Feig—who also wrote the script—and the results are spectacular. Full Story
Melissa McCarthy’s Spy opens this weekend. So far, the reviews are excellent. At post time, Spy is rated 94% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to take the box office. That’s amazing and it’s important. Because finally Melissa McCarthy is in a feature that’s deserving of her and also, it’s not often that a female comedian gets to lead. And win. Especially when the pressure to win is so much more. Sandler doesn’t have to worry that his sh-tty movies will cost him. He gets to keep making them. But, as we know, as we’ve seen, when a woman carries a movie and it goes down, Hollywood decides it has to take a break.
I laugh every time I see the Spy trailer. And I’ve seen it several times. I love the way Melissa delivers the “Well that’s a confidence builder" line. Even the scooter part is hysterical…because, yes, why does a scooter need a roof? Also, I can’t wait to watch her scenes with Rose Byrne who’s been impressively showing us so much range the last couple of years.
If Melissa opens at #1 this weekend and Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck comes out strong in a few weeks, following the earlier success of Pitch Perfect 2, the message becomes harder and harder to dismiss. Hopefully. One of the gifts of discrimination is its steadfast myopia. This would also describe the Entourage movie.
Have a great weekend!

So says Paul Feig, the director of the all-female Ghostbusters reboot. In an interview with AlloCine while promoting Spy, Feig said the only way he can see to remake Ghostbusters is to reimagine it with women. I love that he says this, that the only way it makes sense to him is as a female-driven project. Full Story

Jude Law loves a deep V. And a low scoop neck. Going through an airport, I get it. Meeting friends for brunch, sure. Here? Underneath a white-lined velvet jacket? I don’t understand this. I don’t know that anyone else but Jude thinks this looks good. If I had to guess, I would say he’s compensating. Full Story

I loved Melissa McCarthy on Gilmore Girls, so I was glad to see her get a mainstream break in Bridesmaids in 2011, but nothing McCarthy did after that lived up to the promise of Bridesmaids. That movie made McCarthy seemed like a comedic tour de force, someone with the ability to reach the level of Lucille Ball as an entertainer—beloved by popular audiences and critics alike, not only a gifted comedic performer but a genuinely talented actress, too. We’ve been talking about revisiting Ghostbusters in some form or another for years now. For a while it was going to be Ghostbusters III, potentially starring the aged version of the original cast. Then maybe it would be a sequel but with a younger cast, then a straight reboot. Last year it was announced that director Paul Feig would indeed be rebooting Ghostbusters, but with a twist—an all-female cast. Full Story
The highlight of TIFF tonight is probably the premiere for St Vincent at 9pm at the Princess Of Wales theatre. The festival is honouring Bill Murray. They’re telling fans to dress up as him. And of course, he’ll put on a show, like he always does. All that on top of his performance in the film, said to be one of the best, if not perhaps the best, of his career. Full Story
Have you seen The Heat? Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy fell in love with each other in The Heat. And it shows. They have great admiration for each other. They are generous with each other, in every single scene. There’s no doubt that they adore each other. And, as you’re watching, you adore them for it. Full Story

Sandra Bullock is currently promoting The Heat in Europe. She wore black at the London premiere last week -- click here for a refresher -- and she wore black again at the photo call today in Berlin. This is a good look. I love a well tailored classic shirt and that leather skirt is a good length. Full Story
