Dear Gossips,

If you’ve been reading this blog a while, you know I like to get down with a good horny book. And I’ve recommended several. Yesterday on The Social we interviewed filmmaker Laurie Kahn whose documentary Love Between The Covers is screening at Hot Docs this week.

Love Between The Covers is about horny books – the women who write them and the women who read them. Romance is the most lucrative genre in publishing. Romance authors are regarded as the most inclusive community of writers, supporting and promoting each other and their audience.  Read Full Intro

Have you heard about this one? So Mae Whitman played the President’s Daughter in Independence Day. In 1996.   She was 8. Now they’re making Independence Day 2 to come out next year, a full 20 years later. All bets should be off, cast-wise, 20 years later. Who knows who will be available or alive? But in this case, just about everyone is coming back. Full Story

Meredith tries but Stacey Dash is dumb

Generally speaking, I think people should play within their weight class. What I mean by that is I have very little patience for people who are smart, and know they’re smart, giving condescending lectures to people who they know don’t understand the same things they do, just so the smart person can congratulate themselves on how smart they are. Full Story

If you follow a lot of mocktresses on Instagram (like I do), you’ll see the hashtag #girlboss tossed around a lot, along with homages to Sophia Amoruso’s book of the same name. And of course there was the Ban Bossy PSA from 2014 with people like Jennifer Garner and Beyoncé talking about banning the word bossy and daring to be ambitious. Full Story

There’s a piece up today at The Daily Beast about Black Widow and the “problem” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that she—a strong, capable character in her own right—keeps being used in service of the male heroes. I don’t disagree that there is a problem in the MCU, but it isn’t specifically with Natasha Romanov. Full Story

The Avengers are TOO PEPPY

We’ve said it before—the Avengers are the coolest club in Hollywood. When you put that group together, they’re a marketing flak’s wet dream. They sell themselves, they sell the movie, they sell the ongoing pop cultural domination of Marvel simply by showing up. Full Story

As you know, we have a lot of love for Shonda Rhimes here. Normally it’s Duana who gets to hog on loving Shonda. But she’s busy today. So I’m stealing this one from her and it’s big. Last night Shonda was named to the National Association of Broadcasting Hall Of Fame. And it’s not like I have to explain why but I will anyway: what would ABC be with Shondaland? There would be no TGIT. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Angelina Jolie.

She put it in her own words in the New York Times. If you’ve not yet read the piece, click here. This is the part that resonated most with me:

“Regardless of the hormone replacements I’m taking, I am now in menopause. I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes. But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared.”

Jolie’s focus in sharing her story was to encourage others to ask questions, to learn more, to examine the options, to be proactive about our health. And also to not let a body part define who you are or qualify your femininity.  Read Full Intro

One of my favourite Twitter feeds is “Probably A Feminist”, devoted to retweeting people who say things like “I’m not a feminist but women should get equal pay for equal work.” Or “I’m not a feminist but I believe in all the generally agreed-upon goals of feminism. Full Story

Do you watch House Of Cards? I’ve not started the new season yet – don’t spoil! I’ve also not started Kimmy Schmidt. There’s so much goddamn TV! So much GREAT goddamn TV! You know how people loved to watch Sue Sylvester on Glee for about 9 episodes until that sh-t got gimmicky and old? This is Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood on House Of Cards…except it never gets gimmicky and old. Full Story

Amal and George Clooney were out for dinner in New York this weekend. As you know, they’re in town because he’s shooting a movie there with Jodie Foster. Or you could say they’re in town because she’s now a visiting lecturer at Columbia’s Human Rights Institute. "It is an honour to be invited as a visiting professor at Columbia Law School alongside such a distinguished faculty and talented student pool. Full Story
