Movie Reviews and Previews Articles
I can’t believe Michael Douglas won’t be receiving an Oscar nomination for his work in Behind The Candelabra. Because he is BRILLIANT in Behind The Candelabra. An actor still at the very, very, very top of his game. And Matt Damon too. And Steven Soderbergh.
Behind The Candelabra is so f-cking good, I watched it twice last night, back to back. You know what the word is? It’s a word I never, ever, ever use because it’s so, so, SO overused:
But how else to say it? Fabulous, and sad, and hysterical. The kind of movie you keep playing, if only to learn the lines. What makes it even more fabulous is that fabulous was not their goal. They played it straight, no pun intended. In playing it straight, the authenticity gave way to the fabulous, organically. I truly believed in those 4 hours (two viewings, remember) that Michael Douglas and Matt Damon were lovers. Their first kiss was as intimate as any tender and awkward and tense and loving a kiss on film that I’ve ever seen. Their chemistry was so palpable, at times it actually seemed like a home video.
You know how Douglas can sometimes be interchangeable in his roles? Like his Andrew Shepherd in The American President (love that movie) is really just Gordon Gekko, but with morals? Well there’s none of that in Behind The Candelabra. He totally transformed.
We need to watch this together on Sunday on HBO. Behind The Candelabra is exhilarating. My only regret is that the screen is too small. This belongs in a proper theatre.

Katie Holmes is still working on Mania Days in New York with Luke Kirby. Today they were outside, shooting a scene on a bench, holding hands, and then splashing through a water fountain. Be honest. Are you full perving on these photos? Be honest. She took precautions. Which makes me think of Jennifer Aniston. Full Story
Last week a rumor surfaced about Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye being out of The Avengers 2, and that Renner himself could be done with the franchise, as Marvel brass weren’t happy with some comments he made about how Hawkeye turned out. While Marvel is totally willing to recast (see also: Terrence Howard, Edward Norton), sh*t talking is not how you get kicked to the curb. Full Story
Candelabras not invited. Speaking of the absurdities of filmmaking... Check out Megan Fox yesterday in New York shooting Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with co-star Alan Ritchmon. As you can see, he's wearing the framework of a turtle shell on his back. And then they'll add the rest in post. Full Story

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon were in Cannes today to promote Behind The Candelabra, premiering on HBO and HBO Canada on Sunday. Here’s where I get spoiled and whiny and wonder about my screener. That said, I also haven’t checked the mail in several days. By the way, Game Of Thrones fans, Episode 9 has been pre-empted because of Memorial Day and Candelabra will air in its place so don’t be surprised if you tune in on Sunday expecting the Khaleesi and find a lot of rhinestone, marble, and hairspray instead. Tom Cruise was at the Star Trek Into Darkness premiere last night. He did not walk the carpet but showed up for the after-party. As you know, it’s not his style to attend the opening of just anything. The official reason is that he was there to support his friends. But this was a strategic move too. Full Story
Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Steveston (just outside Vancouver) today shooting Godzilla. As you can see, he’s muscled up for the role. There’s a little Channing Tatum going on here, non? And a Hulk in his pants. Oh stop. I mean the rip, see? The rip at the crotch? ATJ and his wife Sam Taylor-Wood, together my obsession, have been in Vancouver for several weeks now with their children. Full Story

Chris Evans is not on my Five List. So while he may have the title of the movie, he doesn’t get the title of my post. Not when Scarlett Johansson and Anthony Mackie are around. Here they are shooting Captain America: The Winter Soldier in Washington, DC yesterday. Why does Falcon have to wear a sweatshirt? Why can’t they put him in a skin-tight tee? Why can’t I be the one laughing at his jokes? And when you think Natasha Romanoff, do you think this hair? I don’t understand it at all. Full Story

They’re making a film adaptation of Into The Woods directed by Rob Marshall. Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp are already attached. Apparently Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine are now in talks to join them...? That’s looking like an impressive cast, not unlike the one Marshall put together for Nine a few years ago. Full Story
