World War Z is one of my favorite books. It’s brilliant, not just as a piece of genre fiction but as socio-political satire. The movie version starring Brad Pitt which was released in 2013 is an abomination and no recent movie has broken my heart the way that World War Z did. Brad Pitt could film himself farting in a jar Full Story

I loved Melissa McCarthy on Gilmore Girls, so I was glad to see her get a mainstream break in Bridesmaids in 2011, but nothing McCarthy did after that lived up to the promise of Bridesmaids. That movie made McCarthy seemed like a comedic tour de force, someone with the ability to reach the level of Lucille Ball as an entertainer—beloved by popular audiences and critics alike, not only a gifted comedic performer but a genuinely talented actress, too. Full Story

Check out Daniel Craig in London on Sunday night shooting Bond Spectre. God he looks great in that ¾ coat. Actually, no, he looks great in both coats. Spectre is due in theatres November 6. That…doesn’t feel like it’s too far away. And I feel like it doesn’t leave a lot of time for post. Full Story

Michael Fassbender in Slow West

A crafty subversion of the Western genre, Slow West is in turns hypnotic, lyrical, and absurd. It’s a pitch-black dark comedy centered on a hopelessly romantic quest that’s more interested in episodic beats than it is a cohesive narrative, which means it won’t be for everyone. Slow West is not badly paced—not at all—but it does present a challenge to the viewer. Full Story

Macbeth was screened at Cannes to very strong reviews for everything – the performances, the cinematography, the pace of the story… And for a minute there it looked like it might contend for the Palme d’Or. Instead, it ended up being Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan. That doesn’t mean it won’t be a player at the Oscars though. Full Story

Chris Pratt is about to start heavy press for Jurassic World. So he posted a pre-apology on Facebook in the event that he f-cks up during an interview. It’s wonderful. He is wonderful. Let’s read it together first:   (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d. Full Story

Sarah reviewed Tomorrowland in the previous post – click here for a refresher. And while the movie topped the box office for Memorial Day weekend, the actual number isn’t great. The number will need to grow overseas in order for it not to be considered a loss. Full Story

The Assassin is a contender

The Assassin was the film that Sarah was most excited about ahead of Cannes. This is how she described it in her preview:  Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien is arguably one of the greatest directors in the world and he has a new martial arts film, The Assassin, about a ninth century girl who is trained to be an assassin by a nun. Full Story

Jake Gyllenhaal was also at the amfAR gala last night and spent some time hanging out with Zoe Kravitz. I’m about to put Zoe Kravitz on my Five List. Am obsessed with her. She’s a charismatic performer. Even though she’s active on social media, she still manages to maintain a distance, a mystery, remaining unknowable. Full Story

Continuing the trend of turning their classic cartoons into live action spectacles, Disney announced that the next property to get the Real Boy treatment will be a kind of Peter Pan spin-off centered on Tinker Bell. The movie is called Tink and it will star AMERICAN CITIZEN Reese Witherspoon as the saucy fairy sidekick of Peter Pan. Full Story

Chris Pratt gives drunk acting lessons

As part of his cover feature in June’s GQ, Chris Pratt filmed a little comedy segment for the internet in which he gives acting lessons, except he got hammered and started the bit by saying he’s too drunk to do the bit. He then proceeds to do the bit while being obviously three sheets to the wind. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Buzzfeed posted a photo on Twitter yesterday that made me hug myself. The Khaleesi and Neville Longbottom!

It came from Matthew Lewis’s Instagram. They’re working together on Me Before You which, presumably, is the film adaptation of Jojo Moyes’s novel of the same name. I wrote about Me Before You in January 2013; after two more readings since then I still can’t decide how I feel about it. But as a movie, it has the potential to become what Nicholas Sparks books-to-movies used to be. You remember how you left the theatre ugly-sobbing after The Notebook? This is what will happen when Me Before You comes out.

By the way, Neville is not playing the male lead. He is, however, showing you his abs and his junk on the cover of Attitude Magazine. I don’t like my Neville when he’s trying to be Justin Bieber and/or Scott Eastwood.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey

Johnny Depp's Australian drama

Holy sh-t it's been one drama after another for Johnny Depp in Australia. And it's not like Australia is unwelcoming of celebrities. As Nicole pointed out in an email to me this morning, when Brange was there last year for Unbroken, they were beloved by the Aussie public. That said, they weren't constantly threatening to bail or compromising the country's quarantine. Full Story
