BAFTA 2012 Articles
Best BAFTA 2012: Meryl Streep
Stuart Wilson/Gareth Cattermole/Dave Hogan/Getty
I think this Vivienne Westwood is glorious on her. Magestic. And it's great encouragement too. That a woman of Meryl's merit, maturity, and stature can wear the SH-T out of a designer garment that was originally sent down the runway on an 18 year old genetic freak. There's also something to be said about her reaction to winning. Full Story
All the handsome men...
Dave Hogan/Gareth Cattermole/LEON NEAL/Getty
Other than Jean Dujardin.Brad Pitt and George Clooney both came without dates. The Jolie stayed back with the children in Berlin and George, perhaps sensing that Stacy’s not helping against Jean Dujardin, decided to go it alone. He’s better alone. When he’s alone, he can be with his boys. He can hug Colin Firth and hold his hand. Full Story
BAFTA Worst: Penelope Cruz
Gareth Cattermole/LEON NEAL/Getty
As you know already, I don’t like most red dresses. And especially on red carpets. That’s the first problem. And that’s not even the worst problem. Mr Armani’s chest plate is offensive to me. They way it cuts off her arms on the insides is offensive to me. And the way it boxes out her waist is even more so. Full Story
BAFTA Bonnie tried
Dave Hogan/Gareth Cattermole/Getty
I think I might like all the pieces Bonnie Wright is wearing on their own, separate from each other. Out for dinner? To a cocktail party? Sure.On the red carpet at the most prestigious British award show? We may have under-aimed, you know? There’s only so far they can coast on the “quirky, young actors” pass before you want to tell them, gently, that Betsey Johnson exists. Full Story
Worst BAFTA Eyeroll - Shailene Woodley
Wenn, Gareth Cattermole/Getty
(I should check whether I’ve done ‘worst eyeroll’ before. I feel like it’s becoming a popular category). Let’s discuss Ms. Woodley for a second. She landed on that most…average of teen shows The Secret Life Of The American Teenager. Do not try to tell me that her superlative acting talent jumped out at you, because I cannot hear it. BAFTA Limited: Michelle Williams
CARL COURT/Gareth Cattermole/Getty
So you’re Tilda Swinton and you have a certain...aesthetic. We can agree that Michelle Williams doesn’t share that aesthetic, right? Michelle Williams has a different range. She goes from Marchesa to Chanel to Valentino to this, H&M, a lovely if not terribly inspiring dress ... but then again, it’s H&M so it’s not like we’re judging by the standards of a proper design house. Best BAFTA Mystery: Kristen Wiig
Gareth Cattermole/Stuart Wilson/Getty
Are you KIDDING me with this? Are you joking about what Kristen Wiig wore to the BAFTAs? Please investigate below…She looks like a fairy princess Vanna White. And I can’t just accept this; I need to find some sort of conspiracy theory in it, apparently. Why is she dressed like this tonight? Is it because she’s not the focus, so she can get away with wearing something that’s (for her) totally subversive? Did she fall in love with this dress and think she could wear it in Britain where she wouldn’t have to answer any questions from Giuliana about whether she was hoping to play a bride next? Did the hair and makeup people she worked with pull a Hunger Games and decide she needed a complete overhaul? Did she forget her choker at home? Okay, enough. Full Story
Best BAFTA Hair: Tilda Swinton
CARL COURT/Dave J Hogan/Getty
A severe side part, height around the crown, and some body. I wish I could be so...brave. My excuse is that my hair doesn’t grow like that. I know this because I tried it. At 12. And again at 19. Which is when you have the balls for it. And the youth to be able to play it off. I recommend this... Just once. Full Story
Best Random Duo: Daniel Radcliffe & Octavia Spencer
Chris Jackson/Getty
I cannot tell you how much these pictures make me laugh. This is what happens in Hollywood. You are Daniel Radcliffe, barely out of your teens, and you are there because Harry Potter, your stunningly successful magic franchise, is up for some final awards, none glamorous, and which will require you to be the smiling face of the enterprise when everyone takes pictures of the Harry Potter team at the last BAFTAs that will celebrate the production. Best Date to a British Awards Show: - Jon Hamm
Wenn, Gareth Cattermole/Getty
Do you think he’d be a good date? As soon as Lainey and I talked about the BAFTAs I got all panicky: “Where is she? Is she here?” And apparently, she wasn’t. She being Jennifer Westfeldt, who is absent as often as she’s with him. \I don’t think there’s anything afoot here. Full Story
Viola in pink
Gareth Cattermole/Getty
Viola Davis has been working a lot of colour this award season. There’s been an orange, a green, a white with gold accent, but she seems to prefer pink. Pink has been chosen several times, actually. Some brighter than others. So far, no major metallics. What will be for the Oscars then? Gold? White? Or does she go back to the brights? Viola did not win Best Actress last night. Full Story
Worst BAFTA Wrapper: Christina Ricci
Dave J Hogan/Gareth Cattermole/Getty
This gold dress is the kind of thing that fits my mental description of the type of dress that should be called a ‘wrapper’. You know? “I threw on a wrapper and smoked a cigarillo.” Apparently the woman wearing my wrapper is a flapper .Anyway, it’s a whole lot of gold, and while Ricci got love from me re: anything she does is cute, she can’t carry off this amount of dress the way a taller woman with a fuller figure could. The BAFTAs 2012
We’re now inside two weeks out from the Oscars. And George Clooney, must be sweating. After taking the SAG, Jean Dujardin won the BAFTA last night. Now it’s a deadlock. Oscar voting closes on February 21. So there are still a few days...but is Harvey Weinstein running a brilliant campaign for his man, or what? More on Dujardin later. Full Story
