Janet Jackson’s Unbreakable tour stopped in Toronto last night. Unfortunately because our dog Marcus is still in the hospital, I couldn’t go. Several of my friends and colleagues did though, live-texting me through the night to help me feel like I was there. Read Full Intro

Thanks to all of you who’ve been emailing your thoughts after seeing Janet Jackson in Vancouver last night. As you know, she kicked off the Unbreakable tour there and, well, so far, at least the way it’s looking in my inbox, the consensus is that she was The Best. If you’re worried about her movement… don’t be. Full Story
Few people do slow jam wall-dancing better than Janet Jackson. And that’s how she opens the video for No Sleeep. That’s the gift we’ve been given this week after 5 days of great gossip… New Janet! But familiar hair! And that familiar sexiness. So that it’s fresh but still feels old school. Full Story
Younger, faster, stronger? Most of the time, I guess.
But if you watched the BET Awards last night and the tribute to Janet Jackson, that choreography not only still holds up, it’s a challenge for the new generation. And the drop-step-walk from Rhythm Nation will never, ever, ever not look good. So, no, that is definitely not the end. Janet is back. And she more than made up for the excessive amount of Chris Brown during the show.
Smokey Robinson did too. First Smokey lectured the audience about being too far up their own asses and to stop being so spoiled. “So don’t be so full of yourselves.” And this happened right after Diddy introduced him after bigging himself up first. Then Smokey performed and I almost got pregnant. Like, if I had any interest in having a baby, Smokey would have made that happen.
More BET Awards coverage to come.

As previously rumoured, BET confirmed yesterday that Janet Jackson will indeed appear at Sunday’s BET Awards and she’ll be the first recipient of the Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award with a tribute featuring Tinashe, Jason Derulo, and Ciara. "This is Janet Jackson, people! We are excited beyond belief to present her with our inaugural ULTIMATE ICON: Music Dance Visual award and we are thrilled that she chose the BET Awards as the first step on her new road," said Stephen G. I bought Janet Jackson tickets on presale yesterday. Set my alarm for it at 10am to click on the AMEX Front Of The Line link. September 15 in Toronto. During TIFF. I thought that would be my highest Miss Jackson point of the day.
But then I listened to the 43 seconds of new music she posted on Twitter. God her voice sounds so much like Michael’s. At the end of that clip though?
That feels like it’s about to kick in to a funky ass beat, right?
Or, you know, it doesn’t have to. Janet’s given us a lot of ballads too. The last time I saw her on tour – and this was a looong time ago – she did a Come Back to Me/Let’s Wait A While/Again medley that I call up on YouTube a couple of times a year.
So yeah, if the new album is ballads, that works for me too.
Here’s Janet at LAX yesterday looking like she’s in tour shape. I just got goosebumps.
Yours in gossip,
This just in… Janet Jackson announced on her website this morning that there’s a new tour. We already knew about the new album coming in the fall. And to support it, she’ll be going live. She’s coming for us live. She’s coming BACK for us… live. If you’re not smashing around your office or desk or on the bus, hootin’ and hollerin’ with excitement, I don’t know what’s wrong with you. The focus last night was getting up the courage to watch Mad Men, the series finale of Mad Men. Duana basically had to hold my hand. Needless to say, the Billboard Music Awards were not a priority. The only music news that really only mattered to me this weekend is Janet Jackson…
From her lips, on her birthday:
New music…a new tour…a new movement…
Yes, please. Please, yes.
But how about Elizabeth Banks and Pitch Perfect 2? $70 million which means Banks is now holds the record for highest opening weekend for a first time director, man or woman. Also the biggest opening for a musical. And speaking of women, it was women of all ages who decided that they’d spend time with the Bellas this weekend. The Bellas aren’t just for the youth. And the movies aren’t just for guys… although I can’t wait to see how studio executives try to explain it away like it’s a one-shot phenomenon.
