Dear Gossips,

As mentioned last week, I will be defending Raziel Reid’s When Everything Feels Like The Movies on Canada Reads in March. The book was inspired by the true story of a 15 year old boy called Larry who was bullied at school for wearing makeup and heels. In 2008, Larry asked another boy to be his Valentine. Larry’s intended Valentine ended up rejecting him. By shooting him twice in the head the next day. There are kids like Larry who are surviving in silence all the time.

“I don’t want to survive. I want to live.” Solomon Northup, 12 Years A Slave

Jude, our anti-hero in When Everything Feels Like The Movies is trying so hard to go beyond survival and to find a life. His story is provocative but relatable. His thoughts are irreverent but true. His words are important.

Which is why the Canada Council honoured Raziel Reid with a Governor General’s Award last year, making him the youngest person ever (24) to win the prize. However, there is now a petition being circulated requesting that the Canada Council revoke the award because they consider When Everything Feels Like The Movies too “vulgar” for young adult readers age 12-18. Click here to read more about the protest.

Oh Jude would love a controversy. Jude knows that drama sells. But it also gets people talking. And, hopefully, in this case, reading. Also… sharing.

When Everything Feels Like The Movies by Raziel Reid.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey

Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden were married three weeks ago. Last night they sat courtside at the Laker game, relaxed and happy. She just seems so...comfortable, right? That's my Photo Assumption of the scene. These shots remind me of when we saw Cam at another sporting event a few years ago. Full Story

“To our beautiful, warm, feisty Melina on her birthday. Let's just call it as it is - this past year was kind of an asshole to you. It did its worst, and guess what? It's gone, and you're still here. So today, we're not only celebrating you - for being a steadfast friend, a passionate advocate for animal charities, an amazing aunt, and an utterly selfless daughter - but we're also going to celebrate that this year is finally over. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Channing Tatum was on Kimmel last night. He did a bit with his childhood imaginary friend and then announced the winners of the Team Oscar contest. It’s a thing with the Academy where they invite people to submit videos about the best advice they’ve ever received and if they’re selected to be a finalist, they get to be part of the Oscar telecast. And then Tatum revealed the winners. The goal is to support emerging talent.

So… can we assume then that Channing Tatum will be presenting at the Oscars?

Speaking of the Oscars and Channing Tatum, there have been some of you asking about Jupiter Ascending, which opens on February 4th, and whether or not it’ll be Eddie Redmayne’s Norbit. I don’t know. I feel like if anyone has to own that, it’ll be Tatum.  Read Full Intro

Joaquin or Zach?

Zach Galifianakis was at the SAGs the other night with the Birdman team and I kept thinking it was Joaquin Phoenix. Doesn't he look like Joaquin Phoenix now? The real Joaquin Phoenix was probably very happy to not be at the SAGs on Sunday but still had to be in Rome yesterday to promote Inherent Vice and is maybe growing his hair into a Javier Bardem No Country For Old Men bob. Full Story

Sam Rockwell and Leslie Bibb are still together. And they were at Sundance. And that matters to the five of us who care about them, who would for sure rank them top 5 in a cool couple list…even though they are way too cool to be on a cool couple list. Rooney Mara and Theo James are together in Dublin working on a film called Secret Scripture directed by Jim Sheridan. Full Story

Fantastic Four looks surprisingly good

The thing that has always worried me about Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot is that it would just be Chronicle: Redux. And then a couple months ago I saw some rough footage and had a definite YIKES reaction, so my expectations, which weren’t high to begin with, plummeted even lower. I was having flashbacks to Roger Corman’s infamous 1994 Fantastic Four, made entirely so that a studio could keep character rights from reverting to Marvel Entertainment. Full Story

Lupita & Leto: is the Heat happening?

Heat. SAG Heat. That was the title of my post yesterday about Lupita Nyong’o and Jared Leto – click here for a refresher. As mentioned, my Video Assumption was that the way they were interacting with each other – as he pulled her closer while they were presenting and how she leaned back into him with his arm around her just off centre stage – was a sign of … something. Full Story

After Eddie Redmayne took the SAG award over the weekend, the Best Actor Oscar race is solidly Redmayne vs. Keaton, with Redmayne gaining an edge. That hasn’t stopped Benedict Cumberbatch from campaigning his ass off, but he probably just tanked whatever chance he had at an upset by making a really unfortunate, very troubling comment about the challenges faced by “colored” actors in the UK. Full Story

Prince Albert and Serene Charlene were out last night in Monaco to celebrate the patron Saint Devote. Per tradition, they lit up a fishing boat. With candy cane torches. Look how pretty those torches are. I want one. As you can see, Serenity is as happy as we’ve ever seen her. Like, ever. Full Story

Emma Watson is officially a Disney princess

She was already halfway there. Some people just have that “living cartoon” look, like they were drawn by Disney animators then stumbled out of Cool World on accident. Emma Stone has that look and Tom Hiddleston too—he’s a live-action Disney prince if ever there was one. Emma Watson also looks like a live-action Disney character, and it’s now official as she’s been cast in Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Full Story

Rihanna’s FourFiveSeconds

Have you heard it? Do you like it? Do you LOVE it? I LOVE it. Bought it right away and have it on repeat while I’m working. FourFiveSeconds will be on both Rihanna’s upcoming R8 (whatever she decides to call it) and on Kanye West’s new album. And now everyone is speculating about what sound Rihanna will be taking since this is so raw and stripped in comparison to the heavy dance beats she gave us last time. Full Story
