Which do you prefer?
Do you prefer Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP with the multiple wig changes and the cardboard cut-out? Or was Kanye’s stripped down silhouette for Blood On The Leaves more your jam? I give it to Yeezy. I liked the look of his body dancing in shadow. I did not like the high school musical low budget production Gaga served up to open the show. Actually, what am I saying? There are glee clubs all over the continent that present slicker performances than Gaga’s. Was it too ambitious? It’s not that costume changes aren’t possible. But you have to be Madonna to be able to pull them off with precision and clean choreography. I’m not sure Gaga is there yet. Then again, I’m not sure she wants to be. Madonna is a machine in the way she prepares, more and more so, allowing for less and less spontaneity. Gaga seems to embrace a messier spirit. There were times watching her performance that I thought she was playing the part of a dancer, auditioning for a role, and not being able to keep up. Was that the point? I don’t get it.
And Kanye? Kanye who was all business, who came and went and deliberately took himself out of the conversation? You missed him, didn’t you? When he’s all-caps-ing in your face, you rage. But when he’s gone, or when he’s quiet, the silence is boring. We need Kanye to be making Christmas presents at these events. We need him to be Steve Jobs and Rick Owens at the same time. Otherwise, where’s the drama?
