Last year those UK tabloids kept reporting that Johnny Depp had been confirmed as The Riddler in the new Batman movie. At the time there wasn’t even a script ready for the new Batman movie. Needless to say the story was full of sh-t. As is this one.

The UK Sun reported today that Courtney Love has picked Robert Pattinson to play Kurt Cobain in the biopic. Supposedly Pattinson was stalking her, bombarding her with emails and phone calls, desperate to land the part, and eventually wore her down, even though Courtney was a little put off by his “manners”. You see, right there they should have known this story was pure fiction.

But SO many outlets picked it up, declaring Pattinson the onscreen Cobain.

THANKS GOD the report has already been debunked by Spin. Love’s manager laughed off the claims.

Can you imagine? Robert Pattinson playing Kurt Cobain? Him? If Cobain knew about this he would probably kill himself all over again. It’s an incredibly insulting suggestion. While Pattinson can certainly grow as an actor, right now, from what he’s shown, he and his Twi-association would be doing the material a devastating disservice.

The Cobain film is based on Charles R Cross’s biography Heavier Than Heaven, considered not only the gold standard of Cobain biographies but on the list of definitive biographies, music industry or otherwise, period. It’s exhaustively researched, beautifully written, impersonal but also incredibly moving, smutty and serious at the same time, and just as absorbing as fiction. I read it about 4 years ago, right after reading The Tender Bar by JR Moehringer, one of my favourite memoirs ever, because both were edited by the same person.

Heavier Than Heaven stands on its own even if you don’t give a sh-t about Cobain or Nirvana. It’s simply a great book and a comprehensive, unforgettable character study. If you haven’t, read it and you’ll know: any film adaptation deserves … a more imaginative casting decision.
