James Franco, you sound like Lindsay Lohan

More from his interview with Playboy (click here for yesterday’s post if you missed it when he said he knew better than the Academy) and, well, it’s pure narcissism on display now. James Franco is obsessed with James Franco. He’ll probably call that an “art project” too.

Franco resents that critics seem to put the disappointment of Your Highness, and its failure at the box office, solely on him and not Natalie Portman or Danny McBride. I don’t remember this. I thought everyone hated the movie equally, without singling him out for blame. His version of events is different though. His version of events places James Franco directly in the spotlight:

"I didn't write that movie. I was just doing my job. I think I'm fine in it. They knew there were problems with that movie a year ago. Just because it comes out after the Oscars, it's like 'Oh, here's backlash.' Well, you have the year's Best Actress Oscar winner in it, so wouldn't that boost ticket sales? And people want to blame me for that? It's just ridiculous. There's this feeling about me like, 'He's doing too many things. Let's get him.'"

What is the meaning of “I didn’t write that movie”? So as long as he does his “job”, no other responsibility for the project, success or not, falls to him...because he didn’t write it? By that argument, let’s take back his nomination for 127 Hours. Since he didn’t write it and he was “just doing (his) job”. You know, after the Oscar situation, and now this, James Franco, the artist, doesn’t sound very much like a team player.

Naturally, with the imminent release of his new movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes, James is still playing victim. And if the film doesn’t do well, it won’t be because it’s not good, it’ll be because he’s the centre of the universe:

"Critics will be out to kill this movie and blame me for it just because they are out to kill me. Last year people were pretty nice. This is the year when people are going to have fun going after me."

I thought he went back to school and enrolled in 100 different programmes specifically because Hollywood wasn’t stretching him, wasn’t challenging him, was putting him in positions he had no interest being in. Fine. So that means when James Franco accepts a role, he must really believe in it, right? Because otherwise he could be sculpting!

If art, the study of it, the teaching of it, the learning of it, and the publicising of the teaching and learning of it, is so fulfilling, why take parts that you have to keep dismissing later on? The Artist doesn’t seem to be capable of being Accountable. Not unlike Lindsay Lohan. Who is also quick to take credit. If Apes is a huge success, you think James will say he was simply “doing my job”?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens on August 5th. I don’t think I can see it. Not because of James Franco but goddamn it just makes me so sad, the animals, the looks on their faces, and they’re not even real. I can barely make it through the trailer.
