Dear Gossips,

Younger, faster, stronger? Most of the time, I guess.

But if you watched the BET Awards last night and the tribute to Janet Jackson, that choreography not only still holds up, it’s a challenge for the new generation. And the drop-step-walk from Rhythm Nation will never, ever, ever not look good. So, no, that is definitely not the end. Janet is back. And she more than made up for the excessive amount of Chris Brown during the show.

Smokey Robinson did too. First Smokey lectured the audience about being too far up their own asses and to stop being so spoiled. “So don’t be so full of yourselves.” And this happened right after Diddy introduced him after bigging himself up first. Then Smokey performed and I almost got pregnant. Like, if I had any interest in having a baby, Smokey would have made that happen.

More BET Awards coverage to come.

“10 years from now we’ll still be on top” Well it’s been 20. And Puff Daddy’s almost a billionaire, with a net worth of $735 million, making him the richest man in hip-hop, ahead of Dr Dre. (Source) Which is apparently why the athletics department at UCLA recruited his son. Full Story

Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson were photographed at Glastonbury today. People freaked out. This surprised me because I didn’t think there would be any One Directioners at Glastonbury. You remember what Nick Grimshaw said about One Direction and Glastonbury a couple of years ago? "I don't think One Direction's music sounds like the stuff that is historically supported by Glastonbury. Full Story

Am I supposed to be looking at what I’m looking at? The video for Selena Gomez’s Good For You has been released online. The song is basically a four minute moan and tease. She’s telling her lover that no one else can f-ck him like she f-cks him. She can do soft. She can do hard. And he will finish. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

Drake showed up at the Much Music Video Awards last night in Toronto, hosted by Ed Sheeran. It was a surprise. He was there to honour and celebrate his boy P Reign who really didn’t expect Drake to show, as he said afterwards that:

“I honestly didn’t know (he’d be here). He doesn’t make a lot of things I ask him to be at, so let’s just put that out there. I thought there was no way in hell.”

I mean his outfit alone would suggest it; Duana’s probably already bought that “6” hoodie online. She LOVES Drake. And she LOVES Toronto. Another reason P Reign was probably genuinely shocked - Drake was in Atlanta performing the night before coming home. And, you know, he could have just flown back to LA for another party in the foam pool. As I mentioned last week in Smutty Tingles, that was the moment I realised I’ve never lived. It’s not just being invited to one, it’s being invited to one at the age where you should be invited to one.

By the way, at one point, while on stage, a propos of nothing, Drake shouted out Gigi Hadid, the model of the moment:

“Gigi Hadid you’re a sweetie pie tonight”

They’ve been friends for a while. She’s only just 20 now. Like he would have known her from when she was just 16 or 17 years old. Right now, Gigi is dealing with Joe Jonas. Which would mean it’s the perfect big brother moment for Drake to be like…um… are you sure? PS. Last names should be emblazoned across the back of every item of clothing.

Monday morning. And a bonus. A surprise bonus. Isn't it better this way? Instead of all kinds of teasing, followed by technical f-ckups, don't you love it when it just happens without warning? Janet Jackson has a new album coming. She's going on tour. Page Six Full Story

If you hate Taylor Swift and have been waiting to see the end of her world domination, well, today is not your day. Last week, Taylor’s management confirmed that 1989 would not be offered on Apple’s new streaming service. Taylor, currently the most influential, most powerful recording artist in the world, previously had issues with Spotify and is notably NOT on Jay Z’s Team Tidal. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

I bought Janet Jackson tickets on presale yesterday. Set my alarm for it at 10am to click on the AMEX Front Of The Line link. September 15 in Toronto. During TIFF. I thought that would be my highest Miss Jackson point of the day.

But then I listened to the 43 seconds of new music she posted on Twitter. God her voice sounds so much like Michael’s. At the end of that clip though?

Love…reverberated?

That feels like it’s about to kick in to a funky ass beat, right?

Or, you know, it doesn’t have to. Janet’s given us a lot of ballads too. The last time I saw her on tour – and this was a looong time ago – she did a Come Back to Me/Let’s Wait A While/Again medley that I call up on YouTube a couple of times a year.

So yeah, if the new album is ballads, that works for me too.

Here’s Janet at LAX yesterday looking like she’s in tour shape. I just got goosebumps.

Dear Gossips,

Madonna’s new video, featuring Beyonce and Katy Perry and Minaj and Miley was promised to us yesterday. SHE was the one who promised it. On Instagram last week – her words, not mine. Click here to see.

Yesterday she released the poster. It felt like Taylor Swift. OK but whatever. Beyonce alone can take 25 of #SwiftSquad members, no problem. What happened? I waited. I walked all over DC, eating up data on my phone, waiting. I waited all the way from DC to New York, eating up more data on my phone. Nothing.

And what’s even more embarrassing is that this is the SECOND TIME. You remember what happened with the Ghosttown video in April? How it was supposed to drop on Meerkat and the app couldn’t handle it? So yesterday didn’t happen and now she’s saying that Bitch I’m Madonna will be available Wednesday morning. Well I’ve waited now until 9:30amET because I was hoping to open with it and still, I don’t see it.

Inefficiency has never been Madonna’s problem. Why is it so often her problem now? She makes it worse with messages like this:

Video coming soon! Just tryin to make it perfect for all of you β€οΈπŸŒΉβ€οΈπŸŒΉβ€οΈπŸŒΉβ€οΈπŸŒΉβ€οΈπŸ˜„β€οΈπŸ˜“β€οΈπŸ˜ we are hard werking bitches! #bitchimmadonna

This is how it works for someone at the beginning of their career, non? In any business. You open a restaurant and in the early days, maybe the kitchen has timing problems, maybe the restocking schedule is still being figured out and you can’t always offer what’s on the menu. And you apologise to your customers – sorry! we’re new! we are learning, please be patient with us.

But Madonna is not/should not be amateur hour. And lately, all we’ve seen from her is amateur hour. As a fan for 3 decades now, I’m telling you, there’s no joy in this observation. And on top of all that? When the video does – finally – come out, what might save her will be the appearance and performance of OTHER artists: Beysus, Katy, Miley…

That’s not the Madonna I signed up for.

Lainey

Bitch I’m Madonna: the video

Let me just tell you, again, how it was when I was growing up, OK? Old people do this. We have to mansplain to the new generation about the superiority of our world. Back then, a Madonna video and/or performance was a major event. It was tight. It was bold. It was always imitated. Over and over again it was imitated from basements to school gymnasiums to stages. Full Story

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez went out for lunch yesterday. And there were a lot of paps around to document the event. Conveniently this happened just after Madonna released the poster for her new video – which has finally dropped on Tidal (so, naturally, I’m waiting for it to be made available on YouTube and besides, I heard the last 30 seconds of it is f-cked up…so this doesn’t look great on Jay Z either) – featuring Beyonce, Katy Perry, Minaj, Miley, and others… kinda like Bad Blood. Full Story
