In a bit of news beamed straight to us from outer space, Tilda Motherf*cking Swinton is in talks with Marvel to appear in Dr. Strange as Dr. Stephen Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One. Dr. Strange is, of course, being played by Brambles Crumplesnort, King of the Reptiloids of Garlactaca-9. And Swinton, as we all know, is an alien queen come to enlighten us with her radiance. Full Story

Rachel McAdams and Emma Stone joined director Cameron Crowe at the premiere of Aloha in LA last night. Bradley Cooper’s doing The Elephant Man every night in London so he couldn’t be there. But… do you miss him when these two women are around? I don’t. Aloha opens tomorrow. Full Story

For years Marvel has dominated the market of white actors named Chris, building a veritable Chris army with the likes of Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Pratt. But now Warner Brothers/DC is striking back, claiming a Chris of their own—Chris Pine, who is negotiating to co-star in Wonder Woman. Full Story

Jude Law loves a deep V. And a low scoop neck. Going through an airport, I get it. Meeting friends for brunch, sure. Here? Underneath a white-lined velvet jacket? I don’t understand this. I don’t know that anyone else but Jude thinks this looks good. If I had to guess, I would say he’s compensating. Full Story

Tom Cruise is trying to make orange his colour in Georgia on the set of Mena today. I’m not sure if he’s also trying, unsuccessfully, to make himself Jon Hamm in the pants. Probably just a handkerchief. In other Tom news, remember what I said about how he endears himself to the crew? To the production? The cantankerous Alec Baldwin, who’s in the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, claims to have quite enjoyed the Tom Cruise experience, telling The Hollywood Reporter Full Story

Ryan Gosling was photographed yesterday in Hollywood, apparently on break from shooting The Big Short in New Orleans. He looks really good here. Last time I posted pictures of him he had dark hair (click here for a refresher) and I still haven’t washed the bad flavour away yet. Full Story

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard left Australia yesterday – click here to see shots of them trying to avoid paps in their car on the way to their private jet. Earlier in the day, the Australian senate held a meeting to decide whether or not he would be charged for violating the quarantine when they snuck their dogs into the country a few weeks ago. Full Story

There was a screening for Southpaw in Cannes on Friday. And some reported that Rachel McAdams was there alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. But on Saturday she was in Muskoka, 2 or so hours outside of Toronto, for her sister Kayleen’s wedding. Pretty sure, given how close she is to her family, that she wouldn’t have risked missing it to rush to France and come back on a tight turnaround. Full Story

World War Z determined to break my heart even more

World War Z is one of my favorite books. It’s brilliant, not just as a piece of genre fiction but as socio-political satire. The movie version starring Brad Pitt which was released in 2013 is an abomination and no recent movie has broken my heart the way that World War Z did. Brad Pitt could film himself farting in a jar Full Story

I loved Melissa McCarthy on Gilmore Girls, so I was glad to see her get a mainstream break in Bridesmaids in 2011, but nothing McCarthy did after that lived up to the promise of Bridesmaids. That movie made McCarthy seemed like a comedic tour de force, someone with the ability to reach the level of Lucille Ball as an entertainer—beloved by popular audiences and critics alike, not only a gifted comedic performer but a genuinely talented actress, too. Full Story

Check out Daniel Craig in London on Sunday night shooting Bond Spectre. God he looks great in that ¾ coat. Actually, no, he looks great in both coats. Spectre is due in theatres November 6. That…doesn’t feel like it’s too far away. And I feel like it doesn’t leave a lot of time for post. Full Story

Michael Fassbender in Slow West

A crafty subversion of the Western genre, Slow West is in turns hypnotic, lyrical, and absurd. It’s a pitch-black dark comedy centered on a hopelessly romantic quest that’s more interested in episodic beats than it is a cohesive narrative, which means it won’t be for everyone. Slow West is not badly paced—not at all—but it does present a challenge to the viewer. Full Story

Macbeth was screened at Cannes to very strong reviews for everything – the performances, the cinematography, the pace of the story… And for a minute there it looked like it might contend for the Palme d’Or. Instead, it ended up being Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan. That doesn’t mean it won’t be a player at the Oscars though. Full Story
