After The Avengers became the third-highest grossing film in modern cinema in 2012, Marvel handed him a bag of money and the gig directing the sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, approaching the release of Ultron and probably also the end of his tenure at Marvel, Whedon sounds more than ready to go. Full Story

With Warner Brothers electing to save Batman vs. Superman for next summer’s Comic-Con, this summer’s convention belongs squarely to the other superhero orgy in our lives, The Avengers: Age of Ultron. To that end, Entertainment Weekly is featuring a first look at Ultron on the cover of its Comic-Con preview issue, and it is very, very cool. Full Story

Sarah’s probably mad at me that I called this article because I’m sure there are all kinds of nerdy details in these photos from the Aosta set of Avengers: Age Of Ultron that she could be pointing out but …this post isn’t about comic book movies. Joss Whedon is there, of course, because he did the best job of the first movie but also Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Elisabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch. Full Story

Joss Whedon: Crushing it

This week was the premiere of Marvel and ABC’s joint venture, Agents of SHIELD, the small-screen spin-off of Marvel’s cinematic universe, starring Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson. It led the fall season as the most hyped new show, and the one carrying almost unbearable expectations thanks to the success of The Avengers. Full Story

Marvel rocks Comic-Con 2013: Saturday edition

On Saturday, Marvel held their annual nerd rock concert in Hall H and totally buried Warner Brothers/DC’s announcement that the Man of Steel sequel will be a Superman/Batman match-up. That got a lot of screams earlier in the day but by the end of the night, all anyone was talking about was Marvel’s upcoming films, especially Guardians of the Galaxy. Full Story

Is it any surprise? It’s their second home. Marvel made an impressive showing on Friday in both Hall H for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and in Ballroom 20 for their TV venture, Agents of SHIELD. First up, the Agents of SHIELD panel in Ballroom 20. Agent Coulson himself, Clark Gregg, got a standing ovation when he was introduced—by far the biggest reaction for any Marvel actor except for Tom Hiddleston, and even then it was pretty close. Full Story

Look, any time there are new Robert Downey Jr photos, I will always try to post them, even if there’s nothing to say beyond...I love him so much. Today, though, there are new RDJ photos AND there’s something new to say. Or, rather, it’s what Joss Whedon has to say. Whedon is working on The Avengers 2. Full Story

Joss Whedon, God of Nerds, was, pre-Avengers, best known for genre TV fare like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the criminally cancelled Firefly. Then Marvel came knocking and he hasn’t had a TV show since Dollhouse (the one thing he’s done that I could not make myself like) got canned in 2010. Full Story

TIFF Review: Much Ado About Nothing (and a few other things)

I’ve done this movie a great disservice and I feel very guilty about it. I sat down to watch Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing towards the end of the film festival. Bad idea. You see, what’s both exciting and completely soul sucking about the Toronto International Film Festival is that there are always movies to see and places to be. Full Story

For those of us who’ve been Joss Whedon fans since the Buffy days, those of us who’ve suffered through cancelled TV shows and canned film projects, Whedon’s monster success with The Avengers is sweet. It’s like saying—See, we told you this guy was good, we knew it all along. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

The Avengers premiered last night in LA and, as we do these days, there was a big ass race to get out the first reviews. The first reviews are really, really good. Click here for a sample. Oh I can feel all you Buffy/Joss Whedon fans inhaling with pride. Especially Duana. We all have our favourites that turn us into evangelists. Here’s what I’ve noticed about Buffy fans though (and I’ve never watched an entire episode): none of the ones I’ve ever encountered, and I feel like I’m surrounded by them in my personal life, are super conversionists. It’s like they shrug, smugly, as if to say, well you don’t deserve to be part of our club anyway. Whedon has always seemed like just another member of that club, never the leader, which I suppose is part of that appeal.  Read Full Intro
