Am so curious to know what Cormac McCarthy thinks of this trailer for The Counselor. McCarthy wrote the screenplay and his go-to themes are present and accounted for here – the Southwest, the human condition tested by greed and crime, and its unravelling under the insidious effects of violence and moral ambiguity. You’d have to assume that this is what attracted such an impressive cast to the project. Because while it may look slick on the surface, like an Oliver Stone-Quentin Tarantino hybrid, perhaps to attract an unsuspecting audience that gravitates toward a certain kind of derivative storytelling, McCarthy’s work generally engages us in a more profound discussion than drug deal gone bad and hot girl in danger…which is what #HaveYouBeenBad suggests. Picture the 20 year old pulling into the parking lot in his Mercedes G-Class, a birthday present from dad, swaggering into the theatre with all his boys like they’re badasses and looking around at each other in confusion 20 minutes in because “why is there so much …talking”…?

What I mean is that this trailer isn’t anything we haven’t seen before. It’s generic. On purpose? Sexy over substance seems to have been the idea.

The most interesting part, to me at least, is how little of Cameron Diaz we’re getting. A couple of months ago, there was word that Cam’s performance in this film is her best in years. That she stands up very well against all the others. Perhaps it’s a deliberate withhold here then. So as not to spoil the effect. I hope so. I hope there’s a lot more here than what this preview is suggesting.
