Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 2 recap I mean, if you don’t think that Ian Somerhalder smirking as he crosses himself with holy water is one of the best scenes of the fall 2012 TV season, I don’t know if I can help you.   This show is so strong because it is quite literally a melodrama – people are dying and bleeding all episode long, most episodes – and yet it manages to have so many layers in the way it addresses the feelings these characters have, allowing them complex and changing emotions. Full Story

Vampire Diaries Season 4 Episode 1 recap One of my favourite things that is going on on Twitter these days is the TV tweeting by Retta. You know, Donna on Parks & Recreation? Her tweets about Season 4 Buffy were endearing and hilarious, especially since you know what’s coming. Last night, though, she was livetweeting about this episode of  Vampire Diaries – and it was all just like  “Aw, no, and he loved her!” This show moves so fast that all you can really come up with for reactions in the moment are ‘”aw, no!” Did you miss it? Did you worry? Were you like me, thinking there was going to be a bait-and-switch and those who were dead wouldn’t be? I thought about refreshing myself and everyone else about who had and had not been killed, but when it all reverses again in moments, what’s the real benefit? This show is so delicious we’ll go back to the scene-by-scene thing next week because there’s too much to miss otherwise, and because Damon’s one-liners deserve a second airing. Full Story

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 22 recapIsn't that right?  No matter how long a time on earth, isn't the person always gone too soon?   Isn't there always more you could have said or done?  Greater wishes you had to be with them, say the last thing? Nobody ever says, at the end of a life, “well, that was about the exact right time. Full Story

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 21 recap Some shows have a philosophy about second-last episodes. That they are for fire and brimstone and the next week, the finale, is for tears and emotions.  Others don't go in for that level of sentiment. It's the last of the year? Blow everything up - physical and metaphorical. Full Story

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 20 recapWhoo!  I'm just gonna call Rebecca's body walking around with Esther in it “Esther”.  Ya'll down? Or “Resther”? In comes Resther, overseeing Klaus' angst black painting.  He's irritated because he thinks she's Rebecca and therefore late, and she has the White Oaks stake as a peace offering. Full Story

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 19 recapPreviously on VD, Elena loved them both, but Stefan knew Elena had feelings for Damon.  Oh and then there was that Klaus business.  They had stakes to kill him, except for one belonging to murdery-possibilities Ric, which is MISSING. Elena brings Alaric some supplies in a Red Riding Hood sweater and gets all faux-huffy that Damon slipped “Dr. Full Story

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 18The Murder of One doesn't, of course, include the one-in-five boom we were promised.  Why would it?  It's not like they're linked.  And, of course, we have four episodes still to go.   I'm joking, mostly. Finally, after so much marching in place, this episode brought together many of the finest parts of what they've been trying to set up all season. Full Story

It's time to discuss that monthly thesis, "maybe Twitter is ruining society". Yesterday I saw @molls - who, if you didn't know, was an internet presence and writer with a big following long before she was the cofounder of HelloGiggles or a writer for 2 Broke Girls - tweet that “every time I go on the Internet I get my feelings hurt”, and that she's going to get hypnotized not to feel things. Full Story

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 16  It should be categorically impossible to miss fictional people as much as I do, but I’ve decided to neglect the part of me that feels like maybe this level of empathy for fictional people and the ways their families mess them up is a little overstated.     Okay, so previously, Stefan loved …you know, that girl; Rebecca wants to kill a white oak tree (standby on clarity for that); Ric was dating a “dirty Doctor” and got shot for his troubles when he found her bags,  and Elena barely made the preview. Full Story

Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 15 recapThis episode was called “All My Children”.  It’s amusing to me primarily not just because Esther had five and planned to off them all, but in the way that the writers get to play with their character toys, pulling some in, putting others away.  Most got a decent workout this week, but I still feel kind of unsatisfied……and I probably should have known because we start with Elena awake in bed. Full Story

Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 14 recap Whoo.  Whew.  Is everyone OK? Let’s calm and ease in by talking about these Entertainment Weekly covers.  I mean, damn.  I obviously prefer the Elena/Damon one (and discussion on the symbolism of the white sheet can go on for hours), because obviously, but there was a comment on the EW site that the relative nudity of that one really made her sure that Ian and Nina are really a thing. Full Story

Before we get to the recap proper, thank you all for your emails, especially last week when we were in withdrawal.  Brooke writes a lot but wanted me to know about Matthew Davis’ (Alaric) Twitter this week.  Did you guys see this? Apparently the man himself has been asked why Alaric and Elena have such, um…chemistry. Full Story

Okay,  I was walking my dog this week when it suddenly occurred to me that I feel, somehow, like the fourth of the four coffins is Katherine. I get tired of thinking about who-all the Klaus relatives are, but I can wish, right?  So this week was my favourite kind of Vampire Diaries. Lots of emotions and feeling, fewer hearts actually hitting the floor. Full Story
