I get sh-t on a lot for not sh-tting hard enough on Taylor Swift. She's a famewhore. She's desperate. She's controls everything. She made us think badly of Jakey Gyllenhaal for cutting out on her because they were too famous together.

Sorry...?

What I like about Taylor Swift is that she's competent. She had a publishing deal when she was 14. What I don't like about Taylor Swift, as I've written about previously (click here for a refresher), is that despite her accomplishments, her public focus seems to be Love. Just Love. Like romance is the primary goal of being a girl. As I said in my TED Talk, it perpetuates that idea that that’s all young women are good for, and not the White House. Books and movies like Twilight don’t help either.

But for some reason, I keep hoping. When I saw her at the Grammys, having a great time, I thought it might be possible. When I read the excerpts from her new ELLE interview about all the rumours about how she’s always stalking her boyfriends -- click here to see -- I thought, OK, maybe we’re going somewhere:

“I’m sure if I looked up the latest Google Alerts rumor it would say I’m chasing somebody who doesn’t like me as much as I like him – people love that angle on me. They’re like ‘Oh Taylor, coming on too strong again, chasing boys. I never chase boys. They don’t like it!’”

No, it’s not perfect. Yes, she’s implying that forward women aren’t attractive. BUT she knows at least that people think she’s pathetic. She understands that being seen that way is not ideal. Naively perhaps, I believed that, maybe, though it might take time, she’d work her way to the right away of changing that perspective.

And then this...

This is Taylor yesterday in Malibu shooting a video for her song 22. She’s wearing a green beanie. And already people, like a reader called Sarah, are saying that she’s doing it to mess with Harry Styles because he wears a green beanie often too...

Oh for f-ck’s sake.

I wish, I wish, I wish I could say it’s just a green hat and we read wayyyyy too much into things. But with this generation, it’s never too much. With this generation it’s always a note slipped and some shade on top. No generation has ever been so conscious and self-conscious at the same time. And no one is better than Taylor Swift at hint-dropping and clue-baiting. Is that the problem then? Declare a war if it has to be a war! Let us enjoy it with you! Maybe fight on your side. But don’t sneak attack and then claim innocence. This, I suppose, is why she’s constantly being accused of being disingenuous.
