John Mayer confirms it’s over...for now
Michael Rozman/ Warner Bros, Keystone
John Mayer is on Ellen today. He confirmed to her that he and Katy Perry are over.
Ellen: The last time I saw you. You were at the Grammy’s. You were sitting on the same row as Portia and I with Katy (Perry.) And, I know Katy she is a good friend as well and I know that since then you’re not together any more.
Ellen: And, I just want to say. I love you and my thoughts are with you. It’s nobody's business but…
John: Thank you, Listen, it was a very private relationship going in. It was a private relationship during and it’s a private relationship, still. I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other. I’ve been much happier since then. I’m on the same journey as everyone else. Coupling is a tricky thing.
So now he’s all about restraint in relationships, specifically in how he speaks about them once they’re over. You buy that? Here’s the thing about John Mayer: John Mayer loves to talk about John Mayer and if he’s encouraged to talk about John Mayer, if he’s led there, he will go there.
When Mayer called Jessica Simpson “sexual napalm”, it wasn’t during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. That happened when he was talking to Playboy. That’s John Mayer. John, as set up by Ellen, is all country home and decent. John with Playboy is a different John Mayer. Or was. That was the John Mayer who had to be what he wanted them to think he was.
It means nothing that John Mayer didn’t go dirty on Katy Perry on The Ellen Show. It will mean something if John Mayer doesn’t go dirty on Katy Perry with, say, Howard Stern, or Rolling Stone. And when that happens, sure, we can call it that way, and fairly. The question now is whether or not you believe that’s possible. And also, whether or not you believe these two are actually done for good. Many don’t seem convinced of that either.
