It’s almost like you can write the script yourself by now, right? Kerry Washington will show up probably perfectly on time. Her dress will be in a shade of pink or purple or mauve. This time it was champagne blush that had her join ranks with Zoe Saldana and Viola Davis to create a colour spectrum. Full Story

Scandal Season 4 Episode 14 recap We did it! And inexplicably Liv has all of her coats with her! Hooray for coats! No, seriously, I didn’t see this coming at all. I did think she’d manage to weasel her way out of a buy from Iran, because she knows how to push buttons, although I found the fact that it was a female operative both cool and um, dubiously realistic. Scandal Season 4 Episode 12 recap Well, this is one of those oxymorons that happens on television. “How do we make a kidnapping fun to watch?” Lots of moving parts, a hell of a lot of booze, a body count… This episode was more of an Ocean’s Eleven roundup of how you make the calls when you have a kidnapping victim you’d like to save, when and how the President runs the world in the Sit Room (probably the most effective we’ve ever seen him be as President on this show, or at least the most definitive on ‘policy’) and exactly how to negotiate with terrorists. Scandal Season 4 Episode 10 recap. Okay, out of a pretend middle-eastern soundstage, into the fire. Oh, and the President of the United States was convinced to negotiate with terrorists and start a war by his wife, because she feared for the life of his mistress. I mean, I do love this show. How can you not? There are pretty big things we’re meant to swallow, among them that Olivia’s captor thinks he’s going to have her in captivity for the next three years, or that Huck’s hacking, which is usually seconds-long, expanded to fit the entirety of this hour. Scandal Season 4 Episode 10 recap So I have a pretty strong fear of kidnapping. This is nonsensical, because I am worth zero to anyone. But overcautious parents combined with a few too many high-profile kidnapping cases in my growing up years, and now I’m a weirdo obsessive who’s kind of paranoid, still. Full Story

When I was about nine, I found these shoes. Like I can see them plain as day. They were oxfords. Magenta with purple in the saddle part, stiff Kelly-green soles. The laces were sky-blue-and-white. My mother bought them for me even though I was probably going to grow out of them in five minutes. Later that week I was wearing them and fell into a swampy pond. Full Story

Scandal Season 4 Episode 8 recap Do you buy it? Because I do. I buy that everything Olivia Pope has accomplished has been with the guiding hand of her Daddy behind her. Some of the time, even most, she hasn’t needed it, like a parent who holds a cautious hand behind their child in case they fall on the stairs – but it’s been there the whole time. Full Story
Scandal Season 4 Episode 5 recap Well, Scandal wasn’t boring. I can’t exactly decide what it was, in a word, because mostly it was a contradiction. So we come in on the President’s daughter, the completely anachronistically named Karen, who needs rescuing from a party that is bad, and then gets very bad in short order when it turns out there’s a threesome video with her in it. Scandal Season 4 Episode 2 Okay, so. Nicely done. That’s saying something because I thought an elementary-school shooting premise was going to be far more mawkish. Scandal made it not about that, which is impressive and also somehow made the death of Fitz & Mellie’s son Jerry into something relevant, and not just a ridiculous plot twist. Full Story
Season 4, Episode 1 recap I forgot about the soul music. I love the soul music on this show. Gone Girl is a very nice touch, as is Olivia’s curly hair, and what appears to be a first for network 9 PM. Is that a first? Um, digital manipulation? In the first minute, what we know is that Olivia Pope, 100 miles of the coast of Zanzibar, is “Julia Baker”. Full Story
One more night. How To Get Away With Murder and…
The return of Olivia Pope!
And that’s why Kerry Washington has been on heavy promotion all week. Last night it was Fallon. They played the In My Box game. God, she is cute. Irresistibly likeable. Which is why she’s the anchor for ABC’s clever new marketing strategy #TGIT.
Oh Thursday nights.
When I was growing up, Thursday nights were The Cosby Show, Family Ties, and Cheers. Like, we’d get home from school on Thursdays – the worst school days – and then suddenly feel like life was full of possibility. After that, in university, it was Friends, Seinfeld, and ER. Dorm night bonding…
Is that what social media is now on Thursdays? A giant dorm?
Yours in gossip,
Shonda Rhimes is underrated. People fall on their knees for the Matt Weiners and the Vince Gilligans but Shonda Rhimes? Duana posted about Shonda not too long ago in a piece called How To Get Away With An Empire – click here for a refresher. I posted about her amazing Dartmouth commencement speech in the summer – click here for a refresher.
But for all This Woman has done, she still doesn’t get the kind of love reserved for the heavy hitters, the men behind shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad. So the New York Times tried to give her some. Read Full Intro

It’s not arbitrary, of course. Kerry Washington didn’t just choose the orange because she liked it, or as an homage to Orange Is The New Black, or whatever. She chose it, I assume, as she often does, to counteract all the white and grey and beige that is her (gorgeous, cashmere-filled) lot on Scandal. Full Story
